Unlike many of the
RYA Training courses offered by Sea Schools, the
VHF Short Range Certificate course leads to the issuing of a formal license.
Further to this, it's actually a legal requirement that if you have VHF equipment on board, the kit must be licensed by Ofcom, and any operators must hold a VHF license.
Stormforce Coaching were one of the first centres to offer this training using live VHF Simulators, with our sets made by Simrad. These proved so successful that it's now a requirement that any RYA Centre offering VHF radio training has live simulators available.
Since the initial 6 simulators we bought, we've upgraded and increased the number of sets available, and now boast a large number of training simulators for VHF, Navtex, Sarts, and EPIRBS. With four large training rooms in Southampton, and 6 VHF DSC Assessors on the full time staff, we are ideally placed to offer comprehensive and effective training in radio communications.
Once you've got your license, it doesn't expire, so there really is no reason to delay. The minimum age for the issue of the full license is 16. Under 16s can do the course, and will get their license upgraded on their 16th birthday.
We have courses in April on the
1st, 9th, 16th, and 28th, with more dates throughout the year. If you'd like to attend any of those, or for further information, please do call the office on 02380 231122 or e-mail
