Advice for auxilary engine Highfield OM640 - mount type and HP

Planning some adventerous PNW camping expeditions with my family and would like to add the safety of an auxilary engine for those remote trips. Does anyone have any advice for the type of mount on the transome of an aluminum hulled rib? Would you suggest an out of the box bolted solution, or having a local welder build one? Any advice appreciated.

Also, recommended HP for an auxilary engine? 6.4m RIB.

1 hp / meter I would go 8hp high thrust engine as used on sailing boats since you will be at displacement speed.

@BC_explorer - following this thread and curious to see what you come up with. I run an OM590. We've done lots of camping but never had an auxiliary setup.

BC_explorer Hope a few words of my experience is not too late to be helpful. I have a Hurricane 590 that I had an aux engine installed on for the same reason. We installed it leading up to a trip around Moresby Island (the big one). I chose the 9.9 high thrust Yamaha as I wanted electric start and power lift, thinking that if I did get in a bad situation in difficult water it wouldn't be the time to be hanging off the transom dropping an engine and pull starting. On the other hand, having a pull start would be nice if there were an electrical failure. My fuel line also pulls thru the same filter so I have no redundancy there either. I'm not sure the high thrust was the best choice for my boat, think I might get a little more speed and better maneuverability with a regular motor. With the 150 lifted out of the water the steering control is very poor, so to use the 9.9 I have to drag the 150 in the water as a tiller. I've never used the 9.9 in difficult water or high wind so I can't say for sure how well it would perform when most needed, but I believe I'd get through most situations with it if the current was not strong. It is very slow. The shop in Everett who installed it worked with a fabricator to build an adaptor mount. The limited real estate made it very difficult, impossible if the steering was not linked. There are steering/lift configurations I have to be careful of to avoid damage to the linkage.

If you are getting 'out there' on the BC coast, buy an extra prop and take it with you. The one time I left mine at home I ran the prop through some cobbles, had to beat it out and file it with rocks.

Hope you'll report on places you go on the BC coast. I'm planning a trip out of Kitimat to Campania Island area this year.

Thanks Boydo. I haven't yet installed a kicker so this is very helpful. Enjoy the mid-coast! I did a multi-week kayak trip out of Klemtu that brought us to Campania and it was amazing. Now with kids, I hope my RIB will take me back. Would love to see pictures. I hope you get good weather.
