"Attacking Pirates" with a RIB

More "pirate" stuff but this time a little friendlier :P
New series on Spike TV airs tonight at 10.00pm Pacific time. "Deadliest warrior ."
Hopefully, they are due to show a Pirate episode, that was filmed here in San Diego aboard the Revenue cutter "Californian".
I was the camera boat operator in my XSRIB 550 and spent most of the day alongside the Californian, while they shot the fight scenes and "broadsides"
Not sure just how much of the sailing footage will be used; but probably only a few seconds here and there.
At one point I was pacing the Californian ,just a few feet apart while the Pirates hurled abuse and curses
Hope they keep the "broadsides" in; as the camera guy jumped a mile when they let loose We were pretty close though
A lot of the Maritime museum volunteers were extras as Pirates ,so will be interesting to see.
Glad there were no Navy Seal teams around when we shot this one !
cheers Dal

Sounds like you're having fun down there.

Off-topic: I've been going to a chiropractic college here in Hayward (East Bay); my intern is due to graduate and relocate to SD in June. You guys are pissing me off...

Hmmm, Do you think the Capt gets tired of all of us zipping around his sailing vessel? I can only imagine being that skipper for a day on the bay this summer with everything afloat circling!

Real pirates use ribs, sibs and an AK.

Scourge of the seas approaches the Californian

Hi Kelson,
nice shot !!
great to see a few more San Diego RIBS/SIBS on the site.
Give me a wave next time if you see me

There are about 5 skippers that take the Californian out and most of them very friendly
Just that they hate it when boats try to pass between "battling" ships.
Had several occasions when they have had to hold fire when a boat comes broadside to them ,taking pictures.
I am sometimes used as an escort boat and politely explain to people, that it's not the best place to be.
I know it's only a blank charge; but it still gives a hell of a blast !
Are you going to be at "Day at the docks" this Sunday?
Will be there doing a kiosk
cheers dal

I contacted the Maritime Museum and got permission to run close up on the Californian since I wanted to grab a reference shot right off the bow. I hate it when impulsive boaters pull that stunt
right in front of me when I'm sailing! The operations manager didn't seem too concerned about my potential manuevers, but did give me the "watch out when they roll out the cannons" advice. I took some reference shots for my illustrator and will get a nicely sketched rendering back in May so I can sample out a shirt. It might get picked up by the Museum, maybe not. But I'll be sure to hold aside one for you! If I make it down on Sunday I'll be sure to ask for you. Lot's of cool stuff to do on the water down here in San Diego, do you hit Humphrey's for the free waterside concerts? Dang, You have a real boat! Have you been out to the Coronado's? I'm considering an expedition when it's hot, glassy and I get my new small kicker/back up outboard. Have fun!

Just checked out your website. Nice photos. If I end up doing business with the Museum I may need more reference shots of other vessels. Maybe we could work out a deal to license some images for commercial use? A little premature, but I'm always looking for good source images.

thumb of an indexed eight color separation (probably won't print this one)

type of sketch design I'm working on for the Californian

Hi Kelson,
havn't done the Coronados, just because I dont have a mexican radio license. I hear they are pretty strict once you get over the border line and dont want to chance it.
Although the Newport to San Diego "Border run" yacht race takes a turn around there this weekend' so may push my luck.
Have been out to Catalina from Long Beach (about 26 miles )though.
Trip out was cake but "suffered on the way back when the weather turned bad.
Like the look of your work
Have thousands of images of all sorts not posted on my site; from navy/ cruise ships/ experimental etc .
Is your business in the design/art side or is that just a hobby for you.?
cheers dal
PS the spike Tv pirate episode airs next tues at 10.00pm.The trailers look fun !

Hmmm, I had a boat license and a fishing license for each passenger in Mex the last time I rolled down. I think the boat license isn't required anymore. But I need a radio license too? Dang, I better check that out.

I've been screenprinting for decades. It has cycled between being a hobby and serious business over time. I have really nice equipment, though I only run a manual eight color press currently. That usually gives me enough gamut to print close to "full color" images. I definitely like working on nautical designs. If I can get a few more of them going it would be a good thing. I will certainly keep you in mind. It is always hard to find good reference shots. I hope the bayshots business is treating you well. I wonder what the yacht race shirt design market would be like? I print for a lot of groups, large crews and some events, but haven't considered that sort of market before. Might be worth some investigation.

Thanks for the heads up on the Spike TV Pirate Episode too! It will be nice to check out the Californian. My illustrator will send me a sketched design of the vessel in early May. I'll hold a sample of the Californian shirt for you when I print. I'll e-mail you at bayshots for an address in May.
