Cold enough for ya...?

Holy Crapoli... Windchill of -35C this morning. Kinda glad I left the boat in storage....

Pic 1 looking is looking out toward the lake from my front yard... The second one is at the far end. Apparently, the white trucks are Navy types doing some dive training under the ice near the boats in the background...

Photos by one of the local tour boat operators...

Now that is just wrong! If man could control the weather and inflicted those kind of temperatures on anyone anywhere it would be considered "Crimes against Humanity". Tuber, you are a tough man!

Sure, we say that in our tourism brochures (along with that paragraph about our vast gopher ranches) - but you can only spin things so far.

Believe it or not, with the proper clothing (down parkas) it is easier to dress comfortably for this than the the freezing rain - sleet - slushy snow - high humidity stuff.

I love sledding but does a sled even start when it’s that cold? I think I will stick close to the ocean where the boat launches stay open year around and the mountains are only an hour away. You’re a tougher man then I.

Yesterday was the first day this year that I broke out my "real" parka... So far this year, it's been Goretex and more recently my "light parka"... I actually love this weather... cold, snow, wind, blizzards. That wet stuff earlier was useless. If you're going to have winter, have a real one!

A few years ago I was in central Quebec... there was a howling gale and the windchill was -75C. Amazingly, with down, quilted pants, mitts, Sorels (with toe warmers!) and a face mask, we were out all day and quite comfortable. I don't think boating would have been great though!

And Tomas, we appreciate your kind thoughts and photos. Next time, something with a thong would be nice too (No offence, but not you... I'm still getting over imagining Rogan in one...). And if you wouldn't mind posting your actual address, there's a few of us are considering a visit...

For all of you that commented on how "tough" we are in this, it's more a case of our being "Latitudinally Challenged". It's not like we moved here by choice!

Well mechanical stuff does get affected quite a bit, things tend to become more brittle and care needs to be taken to warm vehicles up properly, useage of block heaters and the like. Over the last 10 or so years, most of the auto manufacturers have done alot more cold weather testing of their vehicles. Alot of that testing is done in Thompson, Manitoba (about an 8 hour drive north of me).

Thomas, - here's another call for pictures of scantily clad curvacious ladies in the next set of beach pictures you post.

The indiginous population of the Russian Tundra hate the summer. When the ice melts it is boggy underfoot and loads of midges come out. They can't wait for the winter to return.

I would venture to say that is why most of the world's population does not live on nor will ever visit Siberia or thereabouts. Sounds like hell to me. Nuff said.

My maternal grandparents spent a few years in Siberia after being driven out of the Odesssa area. (Their parents who were landowners were arrested and eventually starved to death in a Soviet work camp). As the Bolsheveks moved further east, my grandparents got on the last train coming out of Siberia before the Bolsheviks seized control of that rail line.

They eventually came to Canada and started a successful farm near Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan (where I have cousins continuing that farm today). Gramma & Grampa were tough as nails, and the Moose Jaw area certainly gets it's cold moments, but according to grampa, the Saskatchewan cold never even came close to the cold they experienced while in Siberia.

Couple of weeks ago we had a cold spell (well, cold for California...) Temps below freezing at night (*not* all that common along the coast) and for a week and a half, rarely into the 40's during the day (which again, is pretty uncommon.

I dressed appropriately (T-shirt and jeans) and remained pretty comfortable. At least until I had to go outside.

PT, for you and Stoo and sled dogs everywhere, stand by. I'll go around to to the key this weekend and take a couple of bun warmers!

I had a guy down here in Aircraft Maintenance, a Canadian from somewhere up there in the pines. His story was that the wet time was really ugly, all they did was repair equipment, gamble, drink and fight. When the freeze finally came and they could get back behind chainsaws and skidders, life was good again.

Not really. This morning as I dashed out to my idling, pre-warmed truck, it ocurred that when my mom and her siblings were kids, they used to go to and return from school every day in a horse drawn open sleigh (about 4 miles each way) through completely treeless prairie terrain. When my oldest aunt was old enough (about 11 years old), she drove the sleigh herself with 4 younger siblings (including my mom) as passengers.

An 11 year old girl who could control 2 draft horses and 4 rambunctious sibs in - 30 C temperatures in a howling wind while usually at least 1 mile from the nearest building - now that is tough! And as many nephews and nieces now well know, you just don't mess with Aunt Mary!

I think I'll go turn up the thermostat and crack open a Guinness.
