Just finished a second annual cruise/camping trip on Lake Fontana (TVA Resevoir), between the Smoky Mountain National Park (TN) and the Nantahala National Forest (NC).
I can't recommend this area highly enough for wilderness cruising and camping.
The main course is 30 miles long from the Dam (Fontana) to Bryson City, NC. There are miles and miles of coves and islands, some designated National Park campsites.
Here are some photos for your viewing pleasure. Both craft are Achilles, one 10'2 one 8.5.
No insects. Plentiful firewood. Pleasant nights even during mid-summer. Very little boat traffic and no homes on the Lake since it is Federal and State land.
Lot's of family things to do in the area, National Park and touristy towns and light duty river rafting.
Enjoy.
