Manhattan Chandler

I plan to visit new york in a couple of weeks and as exchange rate is good at the moment I want to buy a navman chartplotter over there, saving me the shipping and uk tax (I hope).

Can anyone recommend a chandler in Manhattan that deals in Navman or Northstar? I've had a hunt on google and only come up with west marine (who dont sell Navman).

Thanks chaps

What happens if you go through the green channel and the goods cost > £145? I think if you try to go through the green channel with excess alchohol or ciggies they confiscate the lot... ...if that happened to your chartplotter it could be expensive.

Iv'e only recently come back from Manhattan.

Security was really keen (and rightly so) I would agree with Polwart

it might be a bit risky but on the other hand the exchange rate is good at the

moment

Even if you pay the VAT and import duty (3%) you'll still save money.

I don't think they confiscate the goods in the green channel do they? I seem to remember Wayne Rooney's girlfriend getting stopped at Heathrow with a couple of suitcases worth of things from new York. They just made her pay the tax - £10k I think

I don't know. I was just asking the question. I believe it is there standard practice with Alchohol/tobacco over the limit if you go through the green channel and get caught to confiscate the whole lot - as an incentive to go through the correct channel in the first place.

This: http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTax...UK/DG_10026463

Suggest that they can confiscate goods too... ...but don't know how likely that is to happen.

In this case pass through the green channel after collecting your baggage. But bear in mind that Customs carry out checks on travellers in the green channel and there are penalties for failing to declare goods. This can include seizure of the goods and any vehicle used to transport them.

I visit the US often and always bring some "prezzies" back with me including in the past, electronics and other stuff for my rib. I have never had any problems.

John, all the below are in the New York area. If you are worried about being stung you can either remove the unit form all its packaging then send packaging, manuals, CDs etc back home via the Post. (dont put a value over $50 on docs) then have the SatNav in your suitcase loose, you can say you were doing some fishing whilst you were out there.

Alternatively send the whol thing back home by post. If you mark up the value as below $50 you wont pay import taxes, however you wont be insured for the full amount either.
