what is the largest rib you would tow with a smaller SUV?
I want to upsize a little from my current 14' Novurania, and downsize from my current tow vehicle.
It looks like i am going to purchase a SUV with a 3.5 liter engine.
I am thinking maybe something around 20 feet with a single 115 or so outboard?
I appreciate any and all constructive advice.
Thanks.

Yes, America is amazing. Thank you.
My current tow vehicle is a 1 ton with a turbo 7.3 diesel.
I would like to get something smaller.

Here's us using turbo'd 4 cylinders getting 125bhp+ per litre and the rest of the world is building coal powered fire stations every hour and driving 7L petrol which only get 50bhp per litre.
What's the point?

I towed my avon sr6 with a Lexus rx300 v6. I must have towed it 10,000+ miles with no issues. Just keep an eye on your trans fluid and temp, and keep it around 55mph on the highway.
The boat / trailer must have weighed around 5k.

Get yourself a Discovery 4 then a 6.5 or 7 m rib won't be a problem for it.

I pulled a 20' caribe with a 90hp Honda with a nissan minivans, all v6 It's really all about the weights of the boat and specs of the vehicle. It was not a pleasant experience especially uphill, it was a struggle and overheating had to be watched for.

Jason,
Thanks for the input.
Definitely gonna check out specs, but the vehicle i am considering appears to have a towing capacity of 7200 pounds.
I am only towing it about 55 miles, and it is flat, but I definitely wouldn't want to exceed the GVW.

My 2010 Grand Cherokee tows my 7m diesel Willard just fine - max rated capacity, boat & trailer, 7200 lbs (4.7L, 4x4). I've never needed more power.

The boat doesn't feel big in the water, or when towing - it still dwarfs the jeep though.

The joke is everyone around the world knows Americans love big cars with big thirsty engines. For many years Petrol or Gas to you guys was cheap in the US and hence no issues around having big cars with big engines, I know you moan today about Gas prices but compared to the UK and Europe your Gas/Petrol is still very cheap.
We laugh because your idea of a small engine is something with 3.5 Litres, In the UK and Europe a 3.6 Litre engine in a car would be deemed as rather large indeed. Most people drive around with 1.6 Litre engines, fast cars over here would have say a 2 Litre turbo charged engine. Anything with a 3.5 Litre engine would be owned by rich people.
And hence your idea of a small SUV would be deemed as rather large over here. As to a Hummer they would be classed as a monstor truck over here, not people would dare drive a Hummer in the UK because they would get laughed at, at every oppourtunity and would get stuck in our towns.
One of the most common form of tow vehicle here in the UK for anything around 6 or 7m of rib would probably be a toyota or similar pick up truck or a land rover defender both of which would be less than 3.5 litres and be classed by us as a large vehicle.
