What kind of RIB is this?

4 Yamaha 300s?

This thing must be big, fast, and expensive.

Google it. I want to say it's designed locally (Newport Beach, CA) and built in New Zealand by the skippers brother. There are YouTube videos on it.

From what I have read that boat was custom built for Emirates Team New Zealand, they designed it in house too....

One of the other team, Artimis has a couple of 40 foot yellowfins, very nice boats....

Morelli and Melvin are famous sailing catamaran designers.

For example one of their monster round-world record breaker cats

You can believe that rib wasn't cheap. Awesome boat.

so at that scale what does the inflatable part get you other than a nice fender all around?

In that video, I love how they're flying along at that speed and the sail is reefed!

Exactly, it's a nice fender. This goes back a long way in Americas cup history because the ribs always tied up to the AC cup boats and moved them out to the race course (no engines on boat the raceboats). Hence the need for a big fender.

Before ribs they used Hatteras' and such in the 70's and before that some gorgeous wooden classic powerboats.

Limeydal;

Wasn't there some kind of tall ship event this past weekend down your way (first weekend of Sept)?

Did you get out for pics?

Salthouse boats Morelli and melvin 50' power cat tender for Americas cup AC 72. Sailboat goes pretty quick; tender has to potentially right the cat. My buddy says they have come close to pitchpoling this RIB trying to keep up with the sailboat.
