Zodiac 640

I have aquired a former US Coast Guard Zodiac 640, black hull and tubes with a 4 cylinder Volvo Penta diesel engine and outdrive. Someone removed the injectors from the engine and rust is visible in the cylinders so I consider that engine a loss. Considering repowering options but wanted some opinions. I could mount a bracket on it and go with outboard power but now I am left with the old engine box... but after looking at the engine space it appears that a small block chevy I/O will fit. I am all for making it a high performance machine but how much value would be lost in going with gasoline power? Has this been done before in a Zodiac? I do not like Volvo Penta, will a MerCruiser I/O fit in the existing location of the Volvo without modifying the stern? Any help is appreciated.

I look into doing that and it was more cost effective to plug the old hole and put a armstrong outboard bracket on there. I have the old volvo parts if your interested from a 93 and a 92. 640's
