Zodiac Hurricane 733
Does anyone have any experience with the performance of these? The one I am considering has had i/o 260hp volvo diesel removed and I would convert to a single 225/250 outboard. Zodiac claims 39mph with the above i/o engine set up. I know that this a heavy military/commericial boat but I am not interested in super high speed. Any comments please. Thank you.

Built like the proverbial brick outhouse. Used extensively by military/coastguard/commercial in North America. Canadian Coastguard runs them here with twin 150 Opti's. I'll ask my buddy who is a FRC specialist how quick they go!

You might give Zodiac a ring and see if they have opinion on the optimum horsepower setup given the conversion from inboard...

I would buy one. Thet perform awesome in the rough water.
I have used them for search and rescue as well as rough water training off our west coast. twin 150's is the norm around here mininum twin 130's or a single 250.

the Zodiac Hurricane 733 is the model I used for the circumnavigation - handles well in all weather and a very proven hull by the military.

I have run these extensively, excellent in all weather. Max hp for the 733 is twin 150's.
I just had a new hurricane 640 delivered 2 months ago we are running twin suzuki 140 4strokes, top speed fully loaded(12 passengers) is 48 mph.
The only problem with these RIBS is the price when bought new!

One thing I forgot to mention 99% of zodiac hurricanes are cored with balsa. so check out the hull really to make sure that water has not made it into the balsa core. If the balsa has got wet in small areas it is not too bad to fix, but it is something to keep in mind.

The hurricane sold at auction with trailer for $3601.00. I did have a set of used military tubes lined up for $3K. However, I was not the winning bidder. Thanks for all your help.

Hey limey, I was just wondering why you did not buy it, I am assuming the boat you were interested in must have been somewhat of a roach, but 3600 with a trailer sounds like it would have been in the ballpark....

Hi Pat
Yea, maybe I screwed up. However the photo's of the hull showed potential hull damage and my buddy in CA was unable to get there to check it out and my schedule did not allow me to get there. Sometimes things do not go right!!!
Have you seen the 10M and 11M ribs currently up for auction? they would be great for someone who wants a large RIB and has the time to re-build.

Yes, i did see those, look to be some serious pieces of equipment, a little bigger than what most of us recreational boaters need generally, though nice to have I am sure! I am keeping my ear to the ground and my nose in the air, if I come across anything out there in the remote corners of the world wide web i will be sure to let you know..

I ended up with that 733 in California. I drove from Iowa to pick it up but a paperwork problem left me returning home without it. I've been reconditioning another RIB since then and will complete it next week, then return to California for the boat.
Fortunately the condition proved to be better than I expected (bidding on pictures alone is really a gamble!) so is a good candidate for reconditioning. I would sell it as-is where-is if anyone is interested in making an offer...but would need to be substantially more than what I paid because of the condition and potential.
At this point I'm not really eager to sell because I intend to convert it to outboards, using the transom extension used on the CZ7 (got the plans from Zodiac), and will probably arrange the deck in a similar fashion. Haven't done that type of conversion before and seems like a fun project. will post pictures as things progress......
