Anti Road pricing petition
I wouldn't normally post stuff like this on ribnet but this is going to hit all of us hard. I'm sick of being a cash cow for a grinning liar on his way out.
Incidentally, the report that recommended this was ordered by the 'new up and coming PM' Gordon Brown.

As I understand this is to forced under preventing "global warming" gimmig... but my feeling all this is just cashing in for the governments spending
Although I do not live in UK, I am frequent over and use hire car a lot and it will be more expensive for me as normally I do up to 900 miles on 3 day trip and most on highways.

The estimate bandied about yesterday was that it'd raise £28 billion.

I too thought that we would be worse off with this but then it occured to me that in theory they would reduce petrol prices as a result (an excuse would probably be made for not doing that though) which might then lead to marine petrol prices being reduced as well (again probably unlikely)...any thoughts?

IF - I repeat IF the government reduced fuel prices it would be a token gesture at best.
We already pay more than any motorists in the World - and the government spends less on our roads as a percentage than most countries.
Looked at a spot vote on the BBC news website and something like 72% of the people are against it.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/default.stm
Simple yes/no click - try it.
I will definitely sign the petition - this government are taking the piss way too much. At one stage we were driving 2,000 miles a week - not for fun but to pay bills and taxes and keep the wolf from the door. Maybe we just shouldn't bother and live on benefits instead!!!
In the days of the Cold War Party members had their own private lanes they could use in Moscow. When Tony Blair was caught using the bus lane on the M4 they said it was for security reasons!!! Now they should never have put a bloody bus lane on a motorway anyway but to let government ministers use it and nobody else is disgusting.

Maybe its time we all reminded our politicians both local, national and EU that they only have a job because WE vote for them to carry out OUR wishes, and if they do not want to do that we can and will vote for someone who will. I am sure if they think they are going to get kicked off the gravy train it will wake them up.

The problem is the majority of people only do what the media tell them to. If the media had turned on Blair BEFORE the last election instead of just after it things would have been very different!!!

One thing this Government has never done is given the average working man any tax deduction. So I can't see them reducing any Road Tax, or Vehicle Excise License, as we keep getting told its really called, when we ask why the money isn't being spent on roads.
And I don't think the Dour Jock called Gordon is going to start being the working mans Fairy God Mother. Labour have too much Social Engineering to blow money on.

Not true. The basic rate of income was cut to 22 per cent in 2000 after Labour came to power in 1997.

Over here in the Colonies, we don't get much news about "local" issues in the UK. Most news concerning Herr Blair is to do with his unwavering support of Bush. It's interesting to read about some of your internal issues as well.
I suppose what our governments share is an unwavering need to create useless, unnecessary laws!

Iam not saying this government is doing well and will not vote them back but i still remember the recession and bust we lived in before , at least since they have been in i have been able to confidently take on a mortgage and build a successful business .
We seem to forget the shit the last government left us in and put all the blame on the present one , so get the old one back and the whole cycle starts again . Dunno whats best but we need a fresh start .
Seems to me the problem with the roads is overcrowdin we are a small island and the boat was full many years ago
We are just paying the price of an empire in decline and now we are being taken over by the empire we conquered and created .

Of course that 3% reduction was a great headline grabber if nothing else. All spin like most things today. I feel sorry for the people that have been fooled by this government over the years.

So why don't we all have a day where we don't go to work. Principally as a gesture against high fuel tax but also as a way to show the government the average working joe isn't very happy with the tax burden at the moment.
These moments are the only time governments listen.
Fill out petitions and some high profile minister will go on TV and say that the issue will be looked in to.
Blockade the roads and fuel depots as have been done in the past and things actually get changed.
Direct action is the only way. I back the signing of the petition because it is a way of legally expressing my views. Unfortunately I thing TB and GB will just pour another drink and then move on to something else.

just a day when the lazy parents walk their kids to school would be a start .
There are at least 6 cars within 100 yds of me that drive the 10 min walk i do every day , just the congestion they cause outside our little village school means I usually get in the gate before they can park having left at the same time on foot .
One thing I will say in favour of this government is that interest rates have remained sensible . Maybe we have paid more hidden taxes but at least people have been secure in their homes .

Possibly more reasonable interest rates but if they matched European Interest rates then I for one would happy with this Government.
Today the Marginal lending facility is 4.25 % in the European zone. Only .75% below us in real terms but quite a lot when your talking paying off thousands of pounds of a mortgage.
Interest rates are stable but they are unfairly high and stable.
