Hi, I haven't read all this thread but I am really taken with the Disco 3, but there is a couple of things I have heard though. Firstly is that it weighs 2.7 tonnes and secondly there is a very expensive belt change at around 100k miles.

I recently watched the three part top gear disco 3 programme again on youtube and thought it was entertaining, even though Mr Clarkson is a tad annoying

To change the belt i think it's at the back of the engine and you had to lift the body off but there is a way round it

Cambelt and rear belt at 107 k or seven years, £650 by LR (although some dealers doing offer price of £350, which is about what the Indy's charge,) No the body doesn't need to come off, mine's being done, err.... tomorrow

It was the body off bit that put me off, still £350 doesn't sound that bad

the 2.7 tonnes is what makes them great for towing, solid as a rock as long as you get the trailer set up right, but it's what makes them winch fodder when off road, don't matter how good the suspension and traction control is, still only on bits of rubber

The 105K mile belt change/Service isn't an issue.

Firstly. All the internet scaremongering is WRONG. The rear (fuel pump) belt can be done without lifting the body, and is a 1hr job for anyone with a bit of common sense who's prepared to put up with a little discomfort.
I've done mine - Genuine LR parts were @£50.

The Timing belt is also part of the 105K service, but again it's very achievable by the DIY mechanic.
I'm about to do mine in the next few weeks, genuine LR parts are @£70.

LR charge @£650 to do them with fluid changes etc, so if you can't tackle it yourself and are buying a higher milage D3 make sure it's been done.

There are loads of other things that can go wrong, but are fixable.
So my advise is not to buy an older/higher milage example if you can't fix it yourself, and can't afford to pay LR £100/hr to fix it.

The HSE does weigh in at 2.7tns, the slightly less 'toyed up' examples are less, but you wouldn't know it when driving one, and I think it makes it a great tow car.

My HSE does @29mpg on a motorway run while not hanging around, or @32mpg at 70mph. Around town 23mpg is usual, I won't even mention what that drops to when towing.

As mentioned DISCO3.CO.UK - Index is where it all happens.

If I had the money I'd upgrade to a D4 in an instant, but the difference in price between a used D3 and D4 is huge.

Mine will probably have to go when the RIB gets sold, and I'll almost be as gutted to see it go as the RIB.

You can play an iPod through the aux but will have to use iPod to navigate or you can buy a adapter from LR at some cost to navigate tracks
I had a Brodit pro clip holder for mine

I'm thinking about selling my D3 ☹

HSE 09 with 36k miles, FSH and manufacturers warranty until August (an additional year/s can be added to the warranty).
Auto, factory fitted tow pack, leather, 7 Seater, AC, sat nav, terrain response etc – every conceivable extra and a few more!
Just had her first MOT with no faults or advises.
Unmarked, drives and tows lovely (only occasionally towed my 6.6 Predator ).
Your welcome to call if you require any more info.
I‘m open to offers……. (sounding around recently a local dealer said the vehicle traded at just over 28k )

Regards

Hi Lee,

The car looks cracking though recent building projects have left me with a £20k budget tops.

Good luck in selling yours :-)
