After seeing the new BMW X6 on a recent episode of top gear
sliding backwards down a grassy slop whilst in park with the hand brake on!
not sure i'd wana trust it on a green slipway!
thats if the X5 & X6 share a similar setup...

If you need a 4x4 you wouldn't buy a BMW.
It was scary just how crap the BMW was though.

fully agree - had one for three years from new- bloody good deal on it, never seen the dealers, goes like a train, good on fuel ,towed an 8m rib on the continent with it-never missed beat, not found anything in our line of work it couldnt cope with, and best of all nobody wants to steal it!

If we swop it will be for another one.
Unlike the bm which has a likeing for visiting the dealers (and at least dick turpin wore a mask!) for a sickie on a regular basis.

Go for a D3or4 great motor 7 seats loads of room 15,000 service intervals had a kia before cheap to buy but thats were it ends service 6,000 £300 a go parts cost the earth etc.

The X5 is an awesome road going tow vehicle. Fast, refined with superb handling. It would need to be a ridiculously shitty slip to cause one trouble. However, it's not a true off-roader. As I mentioned earlier, if you wanna go off-road, buy a LR.

I've now had a D3 for nearly 3 years and can't fault it. No breakdowns or reliability problems, fine around town, great for long trips, holds all the weekend "stuff", and tows so well you hardly notice the boat.

D4 brochures are on my desk right now!

I've worried about hauling the drawbar off my trailer whilst towing with my 4.8 X5 petrol on kickdown .. you literally wont feel you have a 6M RIB behind you whilst accelerating which is a bit frightening

but the tow gear is meant to take it, its the trailer and boat I worry about

On some of the roads I drive on .. being on the wrong side of the road for the least time is a major consideration

As some of my Canadian friends say... there's no replacement .. for displacement

Have you thought about a Hyundai Santa Fe?

My father has one. 40+mpg on a run from a 2 litre diesel auto. Not a bad drive too.

I get the impression that Mrs. J would rather a little kudos with her brand. The Korean stuff is some what lacking in that dept.

Swapped the Holden Ute with a 5.7 V8 for the 5 litre V10 Diesel Touareg, and I love it - does reasonable mileage given it's engine size, has air suspension and as an '05 plate last year it was a bargain compared to the others on your short-list. If you don't need the big diesel, the others are cheaper still, but it only has 5 seats and isn't as big as it looks on the inside. Of course there is the German reliability to consider!

Just got back from dropping the motor off for a service at the VW dealer, but guess what, not a Touareg in sight? Organised a demo though.
I quite fancy a 5.0 V10, not worried about the 5 seats but they are small inside, nice though...

The V10's aren't common but well worth the extra time to find a nice one - despite being rare they are very good value, and not being in Devon means you will have a better choice than me!

Get a disco the others wouldn't pull the skin of a rice pudding.
Had one for nearly 3 yrs used it for everything. Got one for family use will get a commercial one for the farm soon. can't rate them highly enough although there are good alternatives.
