Thanks for joining specifically to offer advice! Although towing is not the primary reason for purchase I am sure others will disagree.
Anyway I thought farmers were too busy for boating?

we normally are to busy but there are some days when you just have to say enough is enough and go for a peaceful days fishing at sea and a bit of cruising!!! bought a futura last year and used it for about 10 days but have lots of things i want to do to make it better to use.so don't worry i will be seeking the advice of all the experts out there over the coming months. you have got to start somewhere haven't you?!

I think you've got the idea
Of all of those the Touareg is probably one of the least costly to run and it still costs a fair bit.
Local MPG we get around 18mpg
On long run without trailer 26mpg
On a long run with a trailer 20MPG
Costs £105 to fill up with diesel lasts about 10 days of my wifes local school runs shopping etc.
Tyres are 250 each (19" alloys) and last about 14k miles
Servicing is about £350 for a average service until you get need a cambelt change then you are looking at about £1000
Tax is £400.00 p/a
If you want to extend teh warranty after the 3 years is up then you are looking to fator in a cost of about £600p/a for a decent aftermarket wty.
However they are great cars to drive and certainly ideal for towing the rib!.

Those are chunky mpg figures. From the D3 we get
On a run- 29/30ish
Locally- 22/24 depending on how it's driven.
Don't know about towing mpg as I don't tow more than 5miles each way.
Many members of the D3 forum claim better figures than I. Not sure how.

I've been struggling with this, but, hang on, what's this?...only 14k miles from a set of tyres, high fuel consumption, wife drives...there we go...it all makes sense now For a minute I was about to start marking the Touraeg down

Make the kids walk to school, avoid rush hour, stick to the speed limit (100 or 110 kph here) , and do the shopping in the Astra!
On diesel, I'm getting about 9l/100km (31mpg) in mixed use - with a bias towards longer drives. Have been as low as 8.3 (34 mpg) on one long trip, 26 mpg around town.
The new 3.0 l D4 is supposed to have better fuel consumption, but the dealer told me that a lot of that is in not planting your foot to overcome the turbo lag of the D3.

Jizm,
Sorry ignore me I thought the V6 tdi had cambelts but was thinking of the V6 diesel in my old passat.
THe V6 3.0 has a timing chain that should not need changing ever (apparently) not sure about the 5.0 litre though.

You clearly have never been in a Touareg V10 5 litre diesel then! I saw one tow a Jumbo jet on tv when they were new, I would put one of them up against a Disco any day of the week!

My trip computer says I'm getting 24 /25 mpg on a long run, it's getting a service next week so I'll let you know how much it turns out to be.

The one that towed a Jumbo had about 7 tonnes of ballast added to it so it could get traction.
