My offering is that it was when the TD5 was introduced, but it could have been when the TDCi(Or whatever it's called) was introduced.

Found loads of 9 seaters up to 2007 but not having much joy on the 12....

Think at the end of 1998 110 Defender station wagon 10 or 12 seaters, to drive need to be over 21 with Cat 'D' license for vehicles with 10 seats or more.

Fairly sure from up to around 2000/2001 had the bench seats in the back for the 12 seat option.

After that changed to four fold up seats in the back making 10 seat option. My 2003 county had the four fold ups.

I've always interpreted that to mean you could drive a minibus provided you weren't doing so on behalf of a company or being employed to do so at the time. So, e.g. I could drive a minibus for my own pleasure (e.g. to take a group of mates away for a weekend, or just as my "main" car), I could drive a minibus for a charity / school / scout group etc, but e.g. if I were a teacher I could not do it for the school (as I would be employed to do it) AND I could not drive a minibus to take a group of my staff to an event.

I know about the D1 license law but thanks for the info. Just trying to find out what the newest 12 seater available second hand would be. Phoned Land Rover in Southampton and he told me 2006 but that doesn't concur with what I'm finding on the web...

I've just gone and bought a 2001 Td5 station wagon, ex-fire service (direct) and it has 12 factory fitted seats, however, the log book says 9!

I've done a little digging and in this case it was the dealer who registered it as 9 when it was first bought.

The newest 12 seater I've ever seen was a 2003 (could have been old stock though)

I think it varies according to what market they went to. I don't think we got them here after 1998 but as we never ordered them anyway I'm not 100% on that (as anybody who has tried it will know, four in the back of a 110 is pretty optimistic even if they are good friends, six is just silly unless they are all under 10 years old). There were always three seating options - four single seats, two twin benches or two triple benches (which were just a bit longer). We still had the 300Tdi engines up to 2006 model year (I have one of the last ones, bought in Apr 2007) but I am pretty sure the 12 seat option was binned long before that. It seems to be more a UK market thing so that dodgy men can take tentloads of scouts away to scare the bejeezus out of them on a foggy moor.

At some point the EU made it illegal to carry people in sideways facing seats and I can't remember when that was either but I think it was 2007 as that is one reason the Puma has forward facing rear seats in the station wagon variants, and no rear seats in the hard tops.

There was a significant model change for 2002 model year when the new dash was introduced with the box in the middle holding the radio, plus the different rear axle, so it could well have been then.

I phoned a local dealer and he said it was 2006 but I am having trouble finding many for sale at all to be honest.
