Ford Transit Custom opinion & modifications.

After that I thought all would be FWD
Apart from the various 4WD options of course.

I wonder how many in the UK are Rear Wheel Drive.
You are I think talking about the Ford Transit.

I am referring to the Ford Transit Custom very different in many ways

VW is definitely a cut above the Fords as Brinormeg said, or I'd even look at Renault Trafic, Peugeot Expert, Citroën Dispatch and the likes. The bulletproof Transit ain't what it used to be imo.

Interesting but I have looked around a lot and it is the Transit Custom I will most likely get.

It is hard enough looking at the many of those there already is available without throwing other brands into the Mix

I get where you are coming from dennis....I've been pondering for a while with the same idea as you.
Van with basic day van vibe and been keeping an eye out for various models....until my head hurts

Pre-covid was the time to be buying a van though, as prices have been crazy ever since and I really regret i didn't buy then

A shortage of new vans on the market, which have made fleet guys hold on to theirs longer, meaning there has been less good second hand fleet kicking around. Then the huge surge in diy camper conversions ......it really is ridiculous out there the prices that are being asked.

My poor old kia estate has been a good old work horse, and lugger, but did fancy a swap for medium van and keep the wife's car as the main car.

But if you are going manual gearbox...your choices won't be anywhere near as limited as mine.

Indeed manual gears gives far more choices. I have been keeping an eye on the Market and Auto Trader vans now have a lot to choose from and I think prices are coming down.

If I manage to get a decent one my fleet would be.

Landrover Discovery. To do the heavy pulling
Ford Transit Custom as a general van with plenty of space with very very basic conversion to occasional sleeper
Ford Mondeo estate for long work journeys (57 mpg)
Motor home for touring holidays with trailer full of toys
Caravan with Disco for trips where we tend to stay in one place.

Gonna look seriously for the Transit Custom very soon

Well we call that a Ford Transit Connect in the USA. So here I am giving bad information, my apologies. I blew past the word "custom" as I figured you meant ordering a "custom color, with custom accessories". I'll shut up now and leave you foreign car folks to discuss.

In the UK we have a Ford Transit connect but that is much smaller than the Ford Transit custom. This is the Connect

I have been doing more research and the majority of Customs available are the 2.0 ltr version with the wet cam belt. By reading the stories this seems to be a big issue but Ford did do a recall. Also there are so many about including loads of AA vans that surly they must be ok

Yeh get yourself a transit ford say the wet belt is good for 150k miles & remember to stick to the 36k oil change interval ( maybe extend it to 40k save some money)
You dont want an auto vw getting the autobox serviced at 60k miles & the belts done at 90k & the oil changed every 10- 20k is a real pita.

Many thanks for those that gave useful comments. [Mod edit}

I am fairly certain I have decided on which one to get it will be:

L1H1
2.2 128 HP version
Most likely the 330.

Several available just under 100,000 miles for about £8-9 K

Hope this helps others which is of course what this forum is about

So your going to believe the forum heresay that the wet belt engine is a lemon with no real experience?
Ford say its good for 150k miles with only 5 oil changes, think of the money you'd save

I think that's the engine I have in my 2016 Peugeot boxer, 174k and still going well. 6 speed manual, 30 mpg.

make sure its had the oil pump recall done and you need to make provision for it to be replaced again at some point they dont last long . there is a global issue with the vane type oil pump failing and destroying engines. other than that there a nice van

Is that' why the wet belt fails?

Nice looking van, what's the plan, a day van, cooker , fridge?
