Ouch. Though that's exactly why the old Landys are a death trap for occupants when crashing at speed and also pedestrians. No give at all. I'd rather have a mullered bumper than face or dead kid.

Helps when you have a non standard heavy duty bumper that doesn't give in an impact. Might want too check it hasn't bent your chassis legs as they are weaker than the bumper?

I had old Landrover Defender once (3 years). Got in a slow 4 wheel slide on ice thankfully didn't hit anything but not far from the curb. But it bought home the thought of the damage to me and my legs inside had I hit something and come to a sudden stop even at 10mph contributed to it being the least used vehicle that I ever owned. It was more of a shed on wheels in the end.

Then I suggest you try towing with a V10 5 litre VW Touareg with air suspension, that does of course depend on your definition of "Best" but it meets mine!

Years ago, (18+) we'd been diving to the Farnes & were on our way back on a wet Sunday evening. The traffic had been stop start all the way down the A1 from Newcastle, we were approaching Ferrybridge & the traffic stopped again. As we set off, I'd just got into second & doing about 15mph & the brake lights came on in front. I braked & nothing happened, the Disco (200tdi) brakes locked up as did the boat trailer brakes, but we carried on sliding on the wet road. We slid into the Astra in front, the rear window of the Astra blew out, slid up my bonnet & landed in the boat, the rear bench seat of the Astra was shoved into the back of the front seats & the rear wheels folded under, the boot was non existent, write off . We had a cracked headlight & drove home. The police did a full investigation & NFA was taken. Ask me which car I was glad to be in

Showoff
I have to admit, I'd use a Chelsea Tractor for towing if I didn't need a proper 4x4 to get the boats in/out of storage.
I love my 3 litre Surf and it's a better beast than a Landy (more room, better ground clearance, handles better, better on fuel) but it's still a bit agricultural. I just can't bring myself to buy something newer that'll get abused the way the Surf gets.

A Disco 3/4 is both. Fit a set of AT tyres and you have a proper 4x4 with comfort.

Having had a fair bit of experience towing long distance I can safely say that the Touareg beats the hell out of anything else, it even has high/low and a decent turning circle, the only thing restricting it is tyres to cope with mud, it even has a diff lock in low ratio so slipways aren't a problem either. The best bit is the air suspension which makes hitching and unhitching easy and it keeps it out of the water when launching.
Mine has done nearly 100,000 miles, tows like a dream and isn't as bad as you think on fuel, having said that I don't fill it full of rusty old jerry cans!

I agree you wouldn't realise it's potential by looking at it but with all of the features of the V10 it's a very capable vehicle, sadly only the V10 has the air suspension .........

Think I'll pass on that one. Lovely cars, but the 3 hour job to change a headlight bulb puts me off a bit.
Not being able to change a bulb on the side of the road on a 4x4 is a bit of a joke.
