What is a "gearbox extension case" and how is it attached to the "main body of the car" ?
<edit> Scrub the first question..I've found my parts manual...

Main body of the car as applies to all parts that fell off and meaning the complete vehicle rather than just the bodywork.
Try driving at night 50miles to get home with the centre tunnel cover removed and a screwdriver inserted into the gearbox trying to find the correct gear and the extension case with the gear lever lying in the rear in a bag.
I am convinced mine was built in Colditz as most of it always seems to "trying to escape" from the confines of the vehicle.......
No sheared studs for my escaping wheel, going round a roundabout a rumbling noise started and as I came off the roundabout to stop a front wheel departed and overtook me . All the nuts and studs were found and nothing wrong with any of them with no previous wwarning of anything wrong.

Ah but in my mind that is way better than something with a “high tec” electronic wigget sending a wrong signal to a ECU and putting a engine and or gear box into limp home mode. Or it giving you no drive at all.
Old tec is good you can fix or work round that. Why did the MOD not spec the landy’s with the new engine? Mate who is in the forces said they view landy’s like an old dog they have their faults and they are not as good as some other breads most of the time. But when the brown stuff hits the fan they will not let you down.

By that do you mean Gordon 'Brown' .. as he still wants to keep a crap business going to preserve british jobs for a motor that is out classed in many regards (although not all) across the world ?
They might be ok off road but so are many rivals .. like an old suzuki etc
Last time I sat in a Range rover 2 years ago .. it was only 1 year old and the dash was falling apart .. utter crap IMO
As BruceB said brand loyalty is the issue IMO .... its a disease.. and some are hooked on it ... time we faced up to the facts .. some do it better than us.. and its a shame we dont/ cant step up to the plate

I love Landrovers but I think the defender is way behind the competition now. It is a shame. Think the new ones are good cars but have doubts about their reliability. Sure I read recently that a Discovery was one of the most faulty new cars up there with Jags and the audi A5. I think the Far east is better at it than anyone else and I dont think the Germans are any better than us.
The old joke is the two things you can see from outer space are the great wall of China and the panel gaps on a Landrover
Despite all that I still quite fancy a freelander!!

Having gone from an X5 to a Shogun and then a Disco, I can say that the Shogun wasn't in the same street as the X5 in terms of quality. The X5 was bulletproof.

What competition? there isn't any really for it which is why when you go to places like the Dolomites - the Pyrenees etc you see them everywhere. Also most utility companies use them all over Europe.
I was shouted at when we went to Spain on holiday - all I did was keep taking piccies of Land Rovers!!!
And as to the New Range Rover and Discovery being crap - yeah right - nothing to touch them. And the new Freelander is in a different league to things like the CRV!!!
And what exactly is wrong with buying British vehicles to keep British people in jobs? It's not just the car workers but the engineering firms - the local shopkeepers - the haulage companies etc etc. Oh and the RIB makers and powerboat school trainers who benefit from more money in the local economy................

Just back from Iceland and they like their 4x4s, pretty sure the Japs were outnumbering anything European including Landrovers.
I would say there are plenty of alternatives to a landrover!! (And as I said before I have soft spot for them and will probably buy one)

Anyone can have bad and good experiences with any car, the x5 is rated as one of least relaiable cars by warrenties direct.

I support people buying a car made in the U.K. Just dont like it when people hype something up too much.

What part do I have to confirm with personal experience?
And as I said anyone can have a good or a bad experience with any car and that may not represent the brand. Especially when they are sold on that brand image.

Having owned 4 BMW large diesels inc. an X5 and two Japanese 4x4's, I'm not going to be convinced by some statistic that BM's are not better built.
Both the the Mitzys began to rust, the BM's wouldn't rust if you threw them in the sea.
It's not hard to find a statistic of some sort to back-up any argument. Japanese 4x4's are half as well equiped as an X5, therefore the X5 needs to be twice as reliable just to be level pegging in your survey.

This is not true, the government has not given any money to Land Rover or Jaguar, they have 'promised' some money if they develop a battery powered car and that amounts to about £27m which in car development terms is chicken feed. Foreign governments have pumped money into their automotive industries while Brown has stood back and let ours go to the wall.
Brown has supported a scrapage scheme which supports foreign produced cars far more than any home produced ones, yet this costs £300 m and supports mainly foreign jobs.
Can you believe the level of our governments incompetence? I find it all staggering TBH.
You question the reliability of Land Rovers and that is fair comment, although a dash falling apart after a year should be covered under warranty. Jaguar however produces highly reliable cars and this is supported by the industry standard test, the jd power survey.
Over the last 10 years I have watched British industry, especially in the Midlands, destroyed. Sometimes its been poor product but mainly its been down to political decisions made by large foreign companies deciding its easier to close a British factory than a French one. Economics never even got a look in, nor has product quality. The lack of fight from our government / people has made the difference IMO.
We can all turn away from a fight and we all have many times, miners, steel workers, dockers, ship building..... .bankers? The list of UK failures over the last 30 years is staggering and it seems that its not on anyones political agenda at all, why FFS?
I love the UK, but its at times like this I feel like moving to another country that has leaders, not weak men and women in control. God save the UK (and quick) All IMHO.

Nice one Tinker - sadly many people would rather keep Wolfgang and Helmut in jobs than you!!!
I do NOT expect people to buy British just for the sake of it - but if there is a good product and you are umming and ahhing over what to buy why not consider the British Economy as a deciding factor - most other countries do - why is Patriotism such a dirty word in Britain these days???

Are all these factories not in England? I seem to remember the scottish car factories being allowed to go down the tubes cos their cars were crap and the build quality poor without a murmur.............................
...........getting coat and leaving quickly..........

There are too many complainers, too many shirkers, and too many other people elsewhere that will do the work for less !!
Like it or lump it.. the way we are going only serves to promote small cottage industries,.. and that applies to cars .. niche markets etc.
I agree with your best point .. the country really is fooked ! but as for Codders and his nationalist agenda .. there is soo much apathy now,.. that I will agree with your other point .. when you fancy emmigrating .. book me a ticket too would you ?
Ive run a company for 20 years .. and you would be staggered to see what I have paid in tax I have both earned, and collected for UK PLC ( as I have) and what have I got left with ? .. not a lot .. and the shit attitude, red tape and beurocracy that goes along with it ? nah .. ' If' I can retire , after the financial boys have raped my savings and pensions ( wee agree on that too ), I'll not look over my shoulder too often at the state of play in this country .. for a change I'll be doing what everyone else seems to be doing and looking after number one
