I donīt know exactly yet, havenīt got the shopping list although I know small version of intercom for closed helmet to connect GSM phone and perhaps mp3 player I think, must be idiot (me) proof to install to the helmet.
I am somehow trying to fit this shopping into my tight travel/meeting schedule which goes from Saturday afternoon through Tuesday night.

Hein Gericke has a shop in Southampton. They're one of the best motorbike clothing/accessories companies in the UK and have nationwide coverage.

Just select Southampton from the drop-down menu for address details. Their shops are unique in the industry in that the in-store personnel do not wear oil-stained overalls and appear to give a sh#t

M and P based in Swansea - loads of stuff suitable for ribbers - just bought some helmets - Ģ40 each - lot cheaper than the Geckos - as I only want to keep the water out of my face!!!

Codders, is there anything you are not an expert on?
Howabout wearing motorcycle helmets on RIBs? Good idea? Widely done? Hmm, nice big bucket on your head. Scoop effect when falling out the boat at 35kts. Now that'll give you whiplash. Or break your neck. But hell, the helmet was only 40 quid and a gecko is 80 so you saved some money. Thats the main thing.

I don't think ANYONE is an expert on helmets on RIBs - or other boats for that matter!!!
I have read up a lot on this subject and there are widely varying beliefs!!!
Just look on Boatmad for example - races don't wear Geckos - but then - what would they know???
Obviously YOU are an expert on such matters so you are quite justified in attacking my ideas!!!
It is MY neck!!! Obviously I would never have thought about wearing it with the strap undone.......

Another point that was made is that an open face is less likely to cause the bucket effect than a full face - having said that most racers use full face!!!

Actually, they do.
The rather nice thing about the Gecko helmet is that it's light and the lining is completely non-water absorbent. Being an ex-motorcyclist, I have got off my bike after a journey in the rain and removed by helmet, to release a torrent or water which was inside the helmet and saturating the neck padding.
Geckos are ideal for RIBs, I've had mine for three years now and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them. In other sports I've never found head protection useable - I never used to wear a helmet when climbing as I found it claustrophobic, it put me off my balance, and because of the extra dimensions it caused me to bang my head on things.
One of the main advantages of the Gecko helmet over the motorcycle helmet is the lighter weight. If you're interested, I can go and weigh each.
Here's a racer (and stand-in navigator - you might just recognise him ) wearing Geckos (full-face version)

I did notice Cookee was using Gecko's - what I didn't realise was they now did a full face model.
I was on about the traditional RNLI styel!!!!
Having said that he seemed to be one of the few - most use more traditional motorbike style full face.

I don't really see what weight has to do with the "bucket" effect anyway - surface area or volume is what counts!!!
Looking at those full face Gecko's they seem to be far more like a bucket than a close fitting open face one!!!

You might be surprised... I'll have a look through my photo archives...
The "traditional" type, which as you correctly point out as being in use by the RNLI are the same as Louise and I use. I like their simplicity, in fact I like my Mk9 better than Louise's Mk10.
Geckos are very popular in many race series... http://www.zapcat-racing.com/default...&displayPage=2

Cod me ole chum, you would find it very interesting to talk to Jeff Sacree, the MD at Gecko. I gave him a real grilling about his product before I bought, and he's a very switched on bloke. The bucket effect of the Gecko open face is firstly accounted for in the visor fixing method. this is a single snap-on stug which must be kept lubricated to make sure that the visor can become detached in case of falling overboard at speed. Secondly, the chin strap is only attached by one rivet, which has been tested to give way before your neck does. Thirdly, the hemet has a high cut at the nape of the neck. This again is designed to save your neck, and the helmet should be worn forwards over the forehead, not as in RNLI publicity photographs where the crew member is wearing the helmet incorrectly!

I have also read this - maybe it was even you who posted it before which is WHY I went for an open face helmet with a visor that sings up easily.
Logic would dictate that if you fall into the water at speed the visor would rip open lessening the "bucket" effect quite dramatically!!!
They actually say the cutout at the back of the neck is for lifejacket wearers and so you can look up at helicopers etc when in the drink!!!
So where exactly do they stand on full face??? Far more likely to give a "bucket2 effect than an open helmet. In fact the Gecko one looks worse than many others as it's flared at the bottom!!!

Geckos are fine for what they're designed for - but bear in mind they have nowhere near the impact resistance of an "good" motorcycle helmet. This isn't a criticism of the product as such, just worth bearing in mind to choose the right helmet for what you're trying to achieve - and, make sure it fits you properly. Personally, I am disinclined to wear a crash helmet when pleasure boating.
