Re: motorcycling

I have got to admit, I am a little disappointed in you gents... And especially you Codprawn! On this forum extolling the virtues of British ribs rightfully so... YET NOT ONE MENTION OF BRITISH MOTORCYCLES???!!! Shame on you!! Well if no one else will take up the staff I will!! A couple of Classic Bikes... Remember, Harleys are like penises, everyone has one. Not everyone has these, and few bikes were ever built that were prettier, or more classic!!!! These are pictures of a couple of restorations I built a couple of years back, If they look nice its because they were deserving of the effort! I have not included pictures of my 1999 Daytona but it is in the Garage behind War Machine, and a similar Yellow!

Not really into motorbikes that's why!!! Got a few mates who are though - one of them is restoring a classic racing Vincent at the moment. He took part in a race with it a while ago and came 3rd up against modern Jap bikes - not bad at all.

Nice to see Triumph are doing well again - people said it couldn't be done but they have. A few weeks ago I saw a load of bikers parked up at the sea front - one bike stood out amongst all the others - really looked stunning - I thought from a distance it was a Ducatti - got up close and yes it was a Triumph!!!

The one that baffles me is Norton - they produced a Wankel engined bike a few years ago and won the infamous Isle of Man TT race - then the bikes vanished - WHY???

Re:Norton

My understanding of Norton's situation is that the company was basically mismanaged, no real new product development so on and so forth. What a shame! I believe at the time of Norton's demise they were the world's longest running manufacturer of motorcycles. Triumph's failure was tied to Norton's, thank god John Bloor resurected the Marque! Britain has such a long and storied history of motorcycle manufacturing and racing it would have been a sin for there to be no current maker there! BSA, Triumph, Norton, Vincent, Ariel, Greeves, Brough Superior, Ajs and others. The Bikes today out of Japan, Italy, and Europe are wonderful machines.... Take a guess where it really all started? You won't have to think long. I love the new bikes but put a classic british single, say a Gold star, or classic twin, say a 69 Bonneville, next to any brand new bike. And look. Limey Soul!

mine is the drz enduro with no electric start which is a pain in the butt but it is a great bike.

controversial comments coming now.......
no pics of british bikes from me as i have had over 30 bikes and none been british, as i my mind the british do not make a bike worth considering for what i want. to me they are lardy over weight slow old hat beasts, however the new triumph looks ok but jap bikes for me i'm afraid
Nuge.....wheelies lovely, have geared mine up quite a bit as it was just too low geared, i purchased a range of front and rear sprockets so i can play around with gearing as i want a bit of on road speed as well

drz is a great bike, very pleased and i am just still getting used to it

I don't find that controversial - The Norton was my first big bike, think I must be keeping it for sentimental value. It is suprisingly pleasant for the sort of riding I do now - Short distance, sunny, country lanes A and B roads.

All my others were Jap bikes.

Cheers

i forgot to say your bike pics look great by the way. British bikes and most british cars are not my cup of tea but they do stir up a lot of emotion with folks.

my absolute fav cars are TVR and Aston Martin

mind you not sure they can be classed as british either these days

added a couple of new babies to the stable today

a yamaha pw 50 for my 5 yr old

and a gas gas TXT280 for me

took little one for his first ride late this afternoon, he loved it but was a bit scared too so will ease him into it gently, hopefully we can take both bikes on the hills so we can ride together.......should be fun

gas gas is so pokey, much pokier that all the others i have riden, even more than a 321 i rode last week so very happy indeed.
