Numberplates?

Does anyone know the exact requirements to get a numberplate made up?

Having not had a car capable of towing the boat since Christmas, I fitted a towbar to the D3 yesterday and then realized I need a numberplate for the lightboard.

I know you need a logbook for the car to get a number plate made up these days, but I was going to send the logbook off to the DVLA this morning to get me put on as the new owner.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to get the numberplate made from the logbook prior to it being updated? Halfords said No yesterday.
Or have I got to wait until the DVLA post it back to me in a few weeks time?

As an aside I was really impressed with how easy it was to fit the towbar to the D3, and it’s the adjustable height heavy duty one, not the easily removable one. All of 10 mins to route and plug in the electrics, and another 10 mins to bolt the arms to the chassis.

Thanks

Nasher.

You should be able to get them made up with the new keepers supplement part of the log book you may need photo id as well. Other option is make one with black marker for the short term or even better make on on the computer put in poly pocket tape on and looks almost like the real thing.

RIBase
I use a sticky plastic letter one. Made up from letters bought from a car shop, on a numberplate template.

Just about legal.

I get 'em via Ebay. Cheap, quick, no docs required.

It makes a mockery of the latest legislation.

I've always got the place I've got cars from to do it for me in the price of buying the car.

Worth a call back to the garage to explain your problem of 'already having sent the v5 off' ???

No use if the plates are for trailer boards though.

Have to disagree there Mollers

When I bought my last ( new ) vehicle they happily supplied me with extra plates for both caravan and trailer board .

I've just told them its for the trailer - most garages will do it for nothing. They just instruct thier 'apprentice/tea boy' etc to get with it. Clearly not if you are buying a smart car however ........

Probably believable with a Disco you might want to tow something.......

Yeah, but what if you don't want a new vehicle with your free plates?

Amazingly, some people just want a number plate. I know it's a hard concept to grasp.

Thanks all, and especially to Carl for the offer.

Stopped in our small local motor factors on the way home and he was quite happy to supply a plate.

Sounds about right. I always use Partco in Southsea for numberplates, never had a problem using the new keepers supplement in the past

It really is a joke, it's a piece of p**s to get an illegal one but a pain in the ass to get a proper one. The idea is to be fully legal it has to have the name of the supplier on the bottom. If you look at a halfords one it is embossed under the letters in the middle. Most of the ones from ebay etc are not. That said I don't think the old bill give a toss as long is is of legal spec with respect to letter size etc....
