The age you are looking at i would assume you will be in the 80k range of miles? I would not expect a1.6 clutch to last long towing with those miles, maybe look at prices for a dmf and clutch before you go ahead as that will likely be your biggest potential expense. For reference my xtrail was 650 quid for parts only.
Btw, take your boat to a weight bridge before you buy anything, you may get a surprise and better to find out now.
My boat was nearly 300kg more than i was told and i have NOTHING onboard other than an anchor. It has cost a fortune to put right (new trailer, car and storage fees up)....

The 1.6l car is the very latest model but that is not what I am looking at. The 1 in question is an older model and has a 1.9l engine and a towing limit of 2oookg.
The amount of boat towing will be small (only out twice this year so far) and I am looking at the car as a kind of jack-of-all-trades.
I understand your concerns regarding weight . I estimate around 1300 kg but even allowing 1600kg I am within the comfort zone.
