Toyota Amazon

440nm@1900 rpm. As has allready been said. All cars have good and bad points. I personally like LR, which is why I used to instuct on them and now sell em. But the Landcruiser / Amazon is a very capable motor and highly rated by me. The new breed of LR is laden with technology, which some like and some dont.

Both brands are very good tow cars

Drove the disco 3 with this 2.7 and an auto box and was shocked at how well (quick) it went. The V6 is a very quiet and smooth motor, I was actually more taken with this than the Range Rover with the V8 petrol. Did think that 2.7L and two something tones was going to be a bit tedious did not realise it had so much torque, and as a wise man once said.

speaking of which why don’t outboard manufacturers quote the torque output as in many instances this could be more relevant than bhp?

To be honest I was suprised as well - it is a lovely engine - very smooth and un diesel like. The V8 diesel must be incredible.

The one thing the Toyotas have in their favour is reliability. And as certain other manufacturers continue to make their products too complicated for dealers to understand and progressively less reliable as well, that shouldn't be underestimated...

I agree the Disco II is probably the ultimate - about as sophisticated as beam axles will ever get on road. And nothing will beat a beam off road.

Remember though it's NOT just LR that are going this way - they are all at it. BMW being the worst culprits. The Amazon engine is much simpler but I will bet it won't be around much longer - it will be ditched in favour of a new high tech engine!!!

My mate with the Cayenne runs a haulage company - he has a mix of Scanias and Mercs on his fleet - the best of them all are the older Scanias with no fancy electrics. They were promised much better economy with the new engines - they still get 8mpg!!!

I haven't had much trouble with my Discovery 300tdi either - even managed to tow a 5.5 ton dumper truck no problem!!!

I also saw an old Police Range Rover pulling a 38 ton lorry off the M4 without too much trouble - I don't think Land rover's towing abilities have ever been in much doubt with people who actually use them!!!

Most unreliable car I have ever owned, I drove seven different courtesy cars in 9 months, Spent half my time back and forward to the main agent. The inside is well finished and the car looks well but never buy one that is not under manufacturers warranty unless you have a spare grand a month for repairs. Sold the car after 9 months and lost £30,000 but at least its gone New Audi tdi Q7 on order.
