Axle suppliers

Was taking a look at the axles on my trailer today and I think it’s probably going to be best to replace the whole lot. The drums are looking worse for wear and the drop arms don’t look pretty.

Where is best place to get a pair of 1500kg braked torsion axles? Currently got Knott drums so may as well stick with them.

I used western towing in Exeter when I replaced my Alko axle a couple of years back. They were very helpful and will deliver anywhere in Uk.

Worth checking availability and lead times...axle supply is is a big problem in the transport industry currently.

These guys build a lot of the axles you end up buying from a retail trailer company but are happy to deal direct with the general public:
https://www.meredithandeyre.co.uk/

The last pair of axles I had made by them for my Indespension trailer worked out that I paid for the pair for what Indespension wanted for one, and they were ready in just 3 weeks.

Beware though, you need to measure up carefully and they will build to your measurements, you can't just order an axle for a BrandX, ModelX.

Awesome service!

And for anyone else in the future wondering if you can get replacement stub axles for a M&E axle with bolt on stub axles, the answer is they no longer make them.
He's sorted

In fairnes to @nasher my preferred option would have been to buy the axles off Meredith and Eyre directly. I'm sure I could have save 100 quid per axle.

However

- they have a 4-5 week lead time currently
- they are shut on summer shutdown until 7th June

Hence why I was happy to pay a hundred quid extra per axle for someone local who has them on the shelf

Glad you are sorted Jake009.

I posted my comment when I saw your thread for the benefit of others searching for answers at a later date, but obviously some would rather infer I'm a bit of a prick for not reading the other thread.

Formula 1 style axle change after work today, whizzed down to Dunkeswell to pick up the axle at 6 this morning, starting swapping it at 6 after work and all done by 9 (my back regrets it).

I’m a bit embarrassed by how bad the old axles were, the drums and brake parts were fine but I’m not sure how much longer the stub axles would have held on for. Probably years but I wasn’t risking it.

For anyone else doing a swap a trolley jack is almost essential for lifting up and aligning the axle on your own.

Spent more time faffing with the mudguards than I did swapping the axles.

All done. The actual axle swap is easy, sorting out all the brake cables and adjusters not so easy. Had to heat everything to free it

Do new axles come greased? I will pull a hub off tomorrow and check.

What does everyone else do to keep the rust away? I had a flushing kit before but will need to fit it to this one.

Well done with the swop and thanks for posting the pics!
Tremendous job when you were fitting out the boat as well.

Mine came greased and I made the mistake of topping them up with four pumps (definitely no more than 4) from the grease gun.

Somewhere on the 270 mile trip to Salcombe a hub cap popped off due to the grease expanding and I didn't notice until I'd dipped the boat. By now the new bearings were exposed to salt water AND grit from the roadside. Not easy to get a replacement cap except by post and I didn't know the size (it was 50mm not 2"). They are so cheap I now carry a spare.
