Axle weight.

The weight of a 1300Kg Braked trailer axle, not what it’s rated to carry.

I changed the axles on my twin axle ‘Triggers Broom’ Indespension trailer yesterday.
It’s been at least 15yrs since I last changed some axles, and I had help then.

Did it by myself this time round at the yard where I keep the boat.
I’m lucky enough to own Four old but really heavy duty Tractor axle stands to put under the frame.
After stripping the old axles off and dragging them out I had to lift the new ones out of my storage container into the back of my Landie, then out of the Landie and get them under the trailer.
Lots of random bits of timber and a Trolley jack were employed to lift them once in place under the Trailer.

And the point of this thread, I’d forgotten how bloody heavy and awkward they are.
I’m quite fit and strong for my age, but my 57yr old body is suffering a bit this morning!

The new axles were delivered on a pallet then dropped in my container by forklift, and the shipping documentation is long gone.

What do ‘we’ think they weight each including brake drums etc?

For future info, I’d just like to understand the difference in weight between a one piece braked axle and a pair of separate braked suspension units plus whatever brackets I’d need.

I dunno, but I tend to put wheels on the axles before I try and manoeuvre them onto a trailer chassis since, in all cases I’ve come across, they’re bloody heavy.

Thanks Matt

Unfortunately with the frame of the trailer supported on 4 axle stands I couldn't put the wheels on and wheel the axles under the trailer from the front or back.

That being said, dragging them under on a couple of bits of old plywood with a rope from the other side wasn't the hardest bit.
That was getting them in and out of the Discovery on my own.

I've actually emailed the manufacturer now and asked them what the weight is.

Looking at separate suspension units and brackets I'm not sure they would work out lighter in the long run, but at least they can be broken down and moved about in several less weighty lumps.

BTW, I've just acquired a "new" Rinda diagnostic tool unit - this is mine, rather than a borrowed one that I had to return - let me know when you need it to recommission your motor.
