BMW X2 Tow Car

Anyone tow with a BMW X1 or X2?

I currently tow with a Navara D40 2.5L which is coming up for renewal and I’m looking for change options.

I have a 6M XS RIB on a twin axle trailer (140hp outboard). As you would expect I don’t even know it’s there when on the back of the Navara.

Problem is I keep it in a marina for the summer so I only tow 2, maybe 4 times a year. I’ve loved the Navara but I’m looking for something different.

I’m looking at the BMW X1 or X2, 2L M Sport, which look to have a brakes weight of 2000kg.

Just looking for some recommendations.

Manufacturer's website will have towing capacity. I would want to get it from the horse's mouth.

Should be fine with either of them, the boat wont be anywhere near 2000kgs. If its only a few trips a year I guess you can pick your time to coincide with the most favourable tide times to recover. Thats the only time you might feel something more capable is better but for what your doing either of those should be fine

First & easiest thing to do is put the boat on a weighbridge. Load it as you would be towing it with the Beemer. Fuel/kit/batteries/spare wheel etc.

I have the x2 sport not towed with it yet but it’s got plenty of power enough for a 6m boat mine is auto but you can drive it like a manual on the paddles if needed.

The issue isn't engine power, it's the ability of the brakes/suspension/chassis to resist the trailer pushing the car around.

A few years ago I had a 2002 Audi A6 diesel estate which had a towing capacity of 1900kg, the engine was 163 bhp and one time I towed an 18 tonne lorry with a rope in an emergency as it had broken down in a bad place. The car pulled it fine but clearly the car would never be able to tow a 10 tonne trailer

I did that with my 585, only because I have to drive over the port weighbridge to get to the slip, and I had a bit of a shock ........ fully loaded with all the fishing gear I am 1.57T on the trailer.........

I think that’s only 380kg less than my current Navara D40 so sounds ok, but I’ll get it on a weighbridge to be sure. Probably more close to the nose weight than overall weight if anything.

I wouldn't stress over the static nose weight too much. It's mostly a bollocks figure - the dynamic nose weight will be 100x more during a heavy breaking event.

I'd much rather have too much nose weight than not enough...

I would definitely make sure that the static nose weight is correct (70 - 90kg). Plod will certainly be interested in the event of an incident, plus it makes one hell of a difference to how the whole rig handles while driving.

As for '100x more during a heavy breaking (sic) event' that really is total b*ll*cks as the trailer wants to carry on going forward laterally, not downwards.

I will agree that I'd rather have too much nose weight than not enough, but it's not difficult to get it just right.

I'm not surprised at that - trailer will be c. 400kg. I'd expect an RC585 with full tank of fuel, anchor, chain, and other kit to be c.1,000Kg.
