Hi!

What is your opinion on this axle? Do you think it needs replacement?

Your trailer is going to get dunked in the briney anyway, so keeping rust at bay is a full time job. Unless there's excessive movement at that stub axle, then rebuild the bearing and check periodically.

The actual stub part where the bearing sits looks rough. Would expect to see a little sheen on this part. At the end of the stub axle, is that damaged?

Depending on the make of the trailer, check out a complete axle replacement cost and weigh it up from there.

Loving your tiled garage floor by the way. I can only dream of such a set up. I need to remove a lawnmower, 4 bikes, a mountain of tool boxes, used oil drum and trolley jacks just to see my boat.

Id say theres a few years left in that yet I'd maybe chip all the rust off & wire brush the life out of it and a coat of zink rich primer to preserve it but it looks structurally sound from the pictures

These cast arms I treat on my twin axle trailer from time to time with fluid film .
It's more cosmetic rather than being a concern .

That looks better than 50% of the Boat trailers on the road in my opinion.

Hi!
Thank you for all the answers.
I`m still worried due to the view of the inside of the axle.
There are some chips coming off.

I think as others have said, it is probably OK but if you are still worried, then replace it. That will then remove any doubt you may have.

And the new one will look like that after a few dunks in the water unless it's degreased thouroughly and protected with something before it's put anywhere near water.
And even then you can't get to the insides.

If you do decide to replace it I always use Meriteth and Eyre:
https://www.meredithandeyre.co.uk/

They make the axles for lots of UK companies anyway, and are cheaper than you'd expect if you're not paying the trailer retailers extra bit.
They are really helpful on the phone, make them all to order in a couple of weeks or quicker, and are happy to sell direct to an individual.

fill the void full of grease to prevent air and water getting in once the oxygen has depleted it will stop corroding denso petrolatum paste is quite stiff heat it up in a pan until liquid then pour in, it will set and stay there

The only way you're going to set your mind at ease is to replace it.
Treat the new one with an anti-corrosion product.

Don't forget that rust is 6 to 10 times the volume of the steel it replaces so a thin flake of rust means you've barely lost any steel thickness.

Last summer one of my wheels simply broke off. Thank god it's a twin axle. Looked a lot worse than yours.
