Red/white marker lights are now superceded by amber marker lights.

I think the red/white ones are now techincally illegal for vehicles/trailers under a certain age. they certainly aren't fitted to HGV trailers anymore.

The trailer should display a white marker light on the front and a red marker light on the rear at the widest point (usually the front and back of a trailer i.e. Box or flatbed). Down the side it should be multiple single amber lights. Its the use of the combined white/red lights down the side instead of amber that's frowned upon now.

Reflectors (as previously suggested x 2) don't work in wing mirrors

Some cars, ie VW/Audi have sophisticated digital towing electronics. As well as disabling fog lights, they also disable rear parking sensors and put car into special stability mode to reduce issues when towing. Which is why an official. VW/Audi tow bar electronics cost a small fortune.

Amber rotating /flashing lights as far as I know can only be used Actually on the Move only by a very slow moving eg( road maintenance sweeper )or abnormal load vehicle .
Think it's a grey area for recovery or breakdown trucks whilst on the move even if they have a car on the back , relative of mine was a transport manager for one of the major national recovery groups(club) & was often getting complaints from the police about their vehicles using amber flashers whilst driving ,,police view was that even if towing a broken down car it's just classed then as any other trailer or caravan & they could only be used whilst stationary at the scene of a broken down vehicle or accident .

Except that there are certain rules about lighting and if you are sitting on 9 points you don't want to upset someone who decides to prove them!

This bothered me not a jot
There are various classes of vehicle entitled (in the UK) to be fitted with orange beacons. One of them is vehicles with a maximum speed of 25 mph. Gritters etc are also pemitted to fit/use at higher speeds.

Beacons (in the UK) must be 1.2m above the ground.

You are confusing using and fitting. The fitting rules are for specific types of vehicle then the use is "when it is necessary to warn"...

Same here

It must have been an omission on the part of the drafting authority - no category quite covers "110 towing a 2.7m wide dark blue Redbay hurtling down country lanes in the dark trying to avoid numpties who pull out again immediately after you pass"

I was towed by AA once and was told to switch hazards off as it was illegal when moving. But that was 20+ years ago so may be out of date advice.

As of September 1990 All trailers over 6 metres in length
must have amber side markers and combined amber reflectors,
Not less than 4mtres from the front
Not more than 1 metre from the rear
With a spacing not more than 3 metres between each lamp .

All trailers over 1.6 metre wide need white front facing marker lights ( though i think there used to be an exclusion if it was a boat trailer used only during daylight hours )
Over 2.1 metre wide both front and rear Outline (front facing profile)lights are required eg( (caravan ).

Max towing length 6 metres
but with a maximum of 7 metres if it is classed as an Indivisible load ( load that can not be readily broken into smaller units ) eg aircraft/ helicopter / boat hull .

Is this correct? If so, my brand new in 2009 trailer is illegal

There is an exemption in Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations for: "A trailer constructed or adapted for the carriage and launching of a boat." which applies to:

- Front Position Lamps
- Side Marker Lamps

I know it's American, but this is a well lit trailer with LED rear lights, wheel arch marker lights and amber side lights. Kinda puts our plastic light boards to shame. I especially like the tail marker lights below the outboard... nice!
