New boat winch
Acquired a nice 8m long 11mm Dyneema rope with SS hook so thinking might as well get a new winch.
Are the braked ones ok to use

I paid about £100 for mine from here. They make them to order in-house, so will make up anything you want. You could also try Union Industries in Leeds.

The winch rope works out about £40
I've prob gone ott with 11 mm but I can use it for other things as well

You could also try typing in Winchmax on eBay. Guy is in Suffolk and has given first class service.
I got a 3000lb winch off him last year and wish I had got it years ago it is fantastic. I use a 45ah car battery which I keep in the boot with a Anderson plug. It takes 46 seconds to recover the boat.
It might be worth a look.

My winch is the same as that manual one pictured, and I've also just ordered a Winchmax 3000lb electric for the new trailer!
I've been using 6mm Dyneema for years on both this and the old boat, plenty strong enough for a boat winch and lasts much longer than the silly straps. I guess it cost me about £25 for the bit I got recently c/w a hook spliced on to it. I bought it from Goodwinch, a 4x4 winch supplier.

I have been looking to upgrade to Dyneema line on my winch for some time. However, my winch, a Fulton T3205, has simply a zinc plated drum which is not really up to the job where sea water is concerned. I do not want to put a new Dyneema line onto this drum as I am sure the sides of the drum will quickly abrade the new Dyneema line.
I have thought about buying the same type of winch and getting the drum properly galvanised, but having to get a brand new drum galvanised seems a bit daft.
Any thoughts on this? Is the Dutton any better in this respect? How has yours lasted PD?

New boat winch
Winch is fine for a 6 year old one, I give it a good wash off & spray with silicone after each outing. Saying that, the dyneema is starting to fur up a bit.
Just had a look at your pics, mine is in better nick than yours.

I'd give it a coat of corroguard or waxoyl before you put the rope on.
