The sales figures speak for themselves. LR have definitely shifted their market focus away from the utility end towards the luxury market. In doing so they have alienated lost a sizeable chunk of their customer base. But hey! It's their business model & the economics seem to add up. Personally I've just left the brand after 8 Discoverys over 26 years, I'm out.

Skoda kodiaq for the win folks, the future towcar for most, you read it here first!

It is a pity towing capacity is largely coming down on mid size buses, nice to see skoda bucking the trend with the octavia, yeti and kodiaq.

Not sure off hand Billy, we will be using the T6 for towing, the Yeti is the runabout, not even got a towball on it. I think it's around the 2200kg mark iirc

Guys, has anyone actually towed something for at least 200 miles with one of those saloon Skoda 4x4 cars? When I've towed my rib (6m, single axle) with a Mondeo, I got a bit disappointed - it was a difficult ride, I could feel I'm towing. The decision has been then made to change wife's car to a Kuga (wife gets to see the benefits of buying a boat!), and towing with Kuga is a breeze - I hardly feel anything.

I've towed prolonged with a mondeo titanium x sport and a kuga titanium x sport, no contest for me, mondeo is better.

The kuga is a focus with a lift kit so the mondeo is a bit bigger in terms of chassis size so not fair comparison really.

I suspect a lot of the rivals will be fearing the Skoda Kodiaq as it will be awesome value for money and good build quality with good looks and plenty leg room .

I've been watching the kodiaq with interest. It will be interesting to see one in the flesh...

The guy who bought my last boat rocked up with a VW Passat 2.0l diesel DSG 4mot, pretty much standard spec for the bigger Skodas/VW/Seats, same as the Yeti in fact. He towed the boat 800miles back to Germany. I called him the next day to make sure he'd got home ok, no problem & the boat towed like a dream he said. The boat was no lightweight, a 6.4m twin engine RC on a 4 wheel trailer, so no lightweight.

VW group cars have done pretty well the last few years in the various towcar tests that various magazines run...

The D4 is the finest tow vehicle I've driven. Had 2, both faultless.

Undeniably true. But for me the amount of on road towing I do is limited. It's launch and recovery from a boat yard I need a suitable vehicle for and the skoda does fine . In the 3 years of the last D4 it did not tow on the highway once. The previous one previous one apart from collection from Yeovil it towed the boat only twice in 3 years. At 18k more than a high spec Superb 4x4 which is vastly cheaper to run , it's a no brainier for me. If the boat needs relocating from its base I can always hire or borrow a full fat 4x4. For most folks if it's a multi role vehicle towing a 6m boat or less smaller SUV or big estate should be fine . My fuel bills are nearly 50% of a Disco . I miss the view of the road tho, so I think Kodiaq will be a likely Suberb replacement all being well in 2 years .

I tend to tow smaller (limited by licence on weight) craft under 4m on unbraked trailers but my local Launch is 30+ miles each way on motorway and sometimes further done 60 miles to a slip for a trip out. Hope to do some more exploring (need to Convince the missus to try camping again)

A big 4x4 isn't necessary but coping with a wet slip or hard sand recovery is

My Toyota landcruiser has just given up on me so looking at a Hyundai Santa Fe this weekend. For a much smaller lighter car it packs a punch with 465 Nm torque and good fuel economy.
