Yeh its realy confusing its gvw for licencing but for vehicle capacity it gross weight eg my hilux rated to 2800kg can tow my 3500kg plated goods trailer as long as its not loaded above 2800kg. My daughter can tow my 1300kg plated rib on its trailer with her golf but cannot tow the empty rib trailer with the hilux.
Hardly surprising people get confused

My old Audi A3 Tdi had a 1980 gvw with a max towing weight on 8% gradient of 1700kg.

Leather recaros and toys for £1,700, could be you forever car. Check its got a towbar!
Unfortunately the max vehicle weight is nearly 2500kg. Usually the kerb weight is quoted, i think it's empty vehicle with 3/4 fuel and 75kg driver.

Sorry, I see this was mentioned above. I think the Duster is worth a look. Also spotted that my Dad's new 1.6 golf, that wouldn't pull the skin of a rice pudding, is also ok for towing 1700kg.

Thanks for all the input.

Decided to buy a 4x4 Duster in the end. So far it's pulled my 6.3 rib over 500 miles with no issues. Not a huge amount of power and zero luxury. But it has managed fine to launch/recover at Tralee, Troon, Largs, Croabh, Anstruther and Port Edgar. It will happily sit at 60-65 on the motorway, but you do have to work the gears on the hills.

Wonder how it will be at 15 years old compared to a swb RAV4 D4D?

https://www.parkers.co.uk/toyota/rav...d-gx-5d/specs/

1500kg towing and weighs 1580kg (is that the mam or unladen )

Found it 1785kg mam https://media.toyota.co.uk/2001/09/rav4-d-4d-diesel/

Could go 5 dr at 1925kg mam also

I think that is unladen weight. From memory I think the Rav4 was over 2T at max weight. Sure there's lots of 15yr old ex examples about. I don't want to own this duster, or what's left it, at 15yrs old.
