The blow out experiance

20+ years of towing never had a s much as a puncture,
on the M5 2 mile to my exit junc 22 ---------Sh-* in hell. near side blow out tell you what wakes you up from your cruising speed, thought the wheels had came off or worse the boat the car was snaking like a bitch, looked in mirror looked like the boat was on fire cars trying to stop every where, made it to hard shoulder. ones under wear needed checking first trust me,

30 sec's the kind road officers turned up as they saw it and also thought i had caught fire, + all what was left of my tyre was in the road causing other drivers havoc.

out come one
mangled steel mud gaurd
one port side tube full of steel tyre particles,
rubber marks all over said tube
colour change in my under garments.

moto of story all and every one watch your tyres and check pressures regulary, i do to be honest and they looked fine to me, will post pic of tyre( not got leed to do so with me) its unreal it ripped clean off like a waggon tyre, and this was a genuine 8ply trailer tyre,

As long as your alright.
It doesn't matter how good your tyres are it can still happen.

You need to have this product put into the tyres , I use it in horse/boat trailer tyres and also motorcycle tyres, prevents blow outs, first saw it at a motorcycle show years ago and it works very well

I used that stuff once - when the tyre was due to be changed - I had a plank with nails in it and deliberately punctured the tyre. it worked great but the tyre went flat overnight. Same the next day. I think it has to be always in motion or it pools at the bottom.

It would stop a tyre from a nail or similar but it won't help if the sidewall goes.

yes unfortunatley i gained 2 very small needle leeks, very small loss of air but got to see if i can get away with just putting a dob of glue on there as opposed to a patch and spoil my new looking tubes, or i may just leave it as there so slight its nothing,

tyres where new with trailer from purchaser 2 years ago, nothing really, as there was plenty of tread, not remoulds no wall damage i beleive the right pressure and no way near over loaded at time of said incident,

drove home more slower today must admit

pics of tyre should of took one of trailer before sorting the guard and bits out, but on the hard shoulder i just ripped it all of, thank god for a 24v Rattle gun in the boot made short work of it all,

just looking at pics tyres where 6 ply not 8, now thats naughty indespension!!! sure std is ment to be 8 ?

i have fitted 3 new 8 ply's now

They must have been defective then? Biggest cause of blow out is under inflation but you've already said they where on bar.

Yeah, but he also said he knew about 2 leaks that were present.

FWIW, I've heard from some sources that trailer tires should be replaced every 2 years. Since they're essentially idler wheels, you can't use tread depth as a wear indication, as the sidewalls are what are breaking down the most. Kind of makes sense I suppose; certainly flies with most of the tire failures I've seen.

I wish someone would build a trailer with tandem wheels, but where the one set could be raised up when you're doing tight manoeuvres. I do a lot of high-speed/long distance trailing, and have had two tires go over the years... and it isn't fun.

Unfortunately, I also need to wiggle my boat into a tight corner to park it, and tandem wheels would make it tough to turn...

20' boat? And a tandem trailer?

Why not simply lose the second axle? You'll lose a bit of redundancy, but since that only matters when you have a tire problem (i.e. twice over the period you've owned it) that should make the tradeoff a little more palatable (plus the advantage of half the number of bearings, tires, etc.)

Just a thought...

That tyre looks cooked...Perhaps it overheated from being flat or under inflated.. I suggest that you stop when you can and check the temp of tyres and hubs. Doing 80MPH towing a trailer is worth 6 penalty points but only 3 are on offer.
