Trailer id plates

I have just changed boats and my latest one has come on a trailer that has been "uprated" very professionally. It is slightly longer than it was and now has a second axle BUT it still carries the original trailer ID plate.

As I believe it's permissible to build your own trailer what is the requirement to have an id plate and the consequences of having one with incorrect details?

All's well till you have an accident. If the trailer is defective you could face serious consequences.

It's pretty well built.

We've had a good look over it and the engineering is sound and probably even OTT.

I'd be happy to get it certified (or is it me that is certified and the trailer that is certificated!?!) if there was a way to do it.

Cheers

If the trailer is defective and it has the right plates on he'd still be for the high jump.
