If it had been a Defender it wouldn't have stayed together long enough to get a picture.

Had my defender for 2 years, hasnt missed a beat, use it offroad, driving on the beach, dragging trailers etc etc, a good machine, and much better than most foriegn rubbish around!
Show me a similar pic of a defender if you can! (if you can it will have been driven by a numpty!)
It it was a defender there would be no pic, because it wouldnt have happened!
I keep hoping someone asks me to help them off the beach, like that situation, just so i can have a good laugh!

What was the outcome of this - did they manage to recover it before the tide came in?
Should have had a Wyllis Jeep... now that is a Jeep!

that Aint a defender, looks like a disco, or range rover.
some numpty tries to do that every year or so on Weston Super mare sea front, usually in a disco or range rover, cos the dont know how to drive it, and then wonder why it sinks axle deep in mud with the tide coming in.
However the OP looked like it was on sand, not deep sticky mud!
so see if you can find me a Defender stuck in the sand on a beach???

So then, is that a Defender has some better kind of four wheel drive system than Range Rovers, Jeeps and Discos, or is that the kind of person who owns a Defender is more likely to know how to drive it properly?

no, none of the above, it's just that there's so many holes in a defender floor the water runs out as quick as it runs in, so it doesn't weigh as much when you're trying to get it out

probably the latter, but a defender does have a lot less "electronic wizzardry" depending on your viewpoint that may be a plus or a minus!
Defender drivers are more likely to have played around off road in thier toys!
Also Defenders are more likely to be fitted with decent tyres. I did say "more" likely, although some of the other more "road biased vehicles will have all terrain, or similar tyres. Tyre choice and of course Knowledge of what your vehicle can handle will count for an awful lot. (plus wading kit, raised air intake, land anchors, winches, diff lockers etc etc do make recovery more probable!)
Now below is a proper off road vehicle!

As I suspected then. It's more to do with the tyres and the driver than the vehicle in reality

On sand it dosent matter about tyre tread the least the better but like I said earlier let the tyres down to 10 psi ish you will be amazed at the difference even on mud
