Gotta say - I made a technically difficult crossing of the Central Icelandic Highlands back in '04 with a Jeep Cherokee (1998 model) and my Defender 110. The Jeep was a very capable little vehicle and we recovered each other when necessary. In each situation, driver or Navigator* error had resulted in the embranglement - but it was the KERR that sorted it out

Me... They are in the sand, mud and water every day (we get through a lot of waxoyl)..... General Grabber AT2s fitted they are brilliant tools and are genuinely good /capable off road....as good /easier to drive well off road than any of my LR's (Series, Def, Disco, RRC)..... I don't need any medals for my off road technique they make it look good...They tow 3.5 tonnes, have clever /not too techie 4wd systems, are cheap to keep going, are comfy on long runs and are a damn sight more reliable than any of my LR's..... oh and the carpets dry out eventually. Anyone can get caught out whatever they are driving (or not if they broken down ).... I'll stick with my Jeeps for now, so there....

My mechanics who I have used for many years have all sorts of toys quad bikes, Honda fireblades, ribs, motor homes "big ones" Jap 4x4's nice pads for houses, and most or nearly all there work comes from LR customers They love em...

First impressions were - why would you do that ...?
There is a Sea Tractor right there on that beach with permanent 4wd, and huge tyres, deep wading potential, that serves the south sands ferry.
Bearing in mind thats what trundles up and down the beach I would have thought long and hard before driving onto wet sand to recover a SIB.
(maybe the Caravan it was towing is completely buried behind it ).

Second thoughts were - how would I get out of that fix if I found myself in it.
He looks too well buried to just let air out of the tyres? the front end looks dug in...maybe past access to the towing eye.
Anyone know how this was resolved or if he even got off the beach?

As for how to get out of the situation in the OP I would suggest a decent winch and hopefully a stong point such as a decent tree, or if you are really "sad" a ground anchor! If you go playing in placesthat you can get into trouble, make sure you have the right toys to get you out of the s..t!

No different than going out in a Rib really.

I think looking at the pic it was probably towed out by the tractor at next low tide, and straight to the scrapyard.

There arent enough of them! if the place was awash they'd be cheap as chips.

Even a defender may have started to struggle once the waves arrived, the sand under the tyres would liquify a tad and the tyre would sink in without even the need for any macho wheel spinning which usually digs most beach victims in up to axles.

Luckily this victim had a small dingy on top so he could paddle ashore, proper preparation you see!

Surely Defenders are not produced in the same quantity as other "mass produced" vehicles therefore the initial cost to build the vehicle is naturally going to be higher (even though this higher price may not necessarily reflect better value for money). This high initial investment gets carried down over the years resulting in a higher second hand cost.

To help the second hand values, LR have a very clever marketing department too that, over the years they have made the Defender fashionable even though in reality it is nothing more than a agricultural work vehicle. Sure Defenders are good off road but so is my neighbour's Claas Ares tractor.....but i wouldn't want to spend every day driving 10miles back and forward to work in a tractor!

Like quite a few others on here i have owned several LR's over the years including a couple of D90's, a classic RR (which i used to take on trialling competitions), a Landmark Discovery and, a long time ago, a series 2A.......do i constantly defend (forgive the pun) Defenders?...no. They have their qualities but after also owning a 3.0 Toyota Surf and for the last 9 years now a 2.8 Pajero...i would never go back. (and that's comming from someone who lives on a farm.)

Still, Defender owners provide great entertainment on the forums....much akin to the seagulls sequence in the film 'Finding Nemo'.....as soon as one see's a picture of any kind of 4x4 then they all start with the "mine, mine, mine, mine..."...etc....as they relentlessly bombard the server with pictures of their own vehicles...

It's almost like an online support group where owners seek consolation from fellow owners and try to reassure themselves that they havent wasted their money paying over the odds for a vehicle which they dont actually need.

The OP had nothing to do with Land Rovers but here we are once again........

Ive had a Grand Cherokee 2.7 CRD since 2002. Cracking car. Great on its own, great for towing and very happy in the ice and snow......

I was also down at South Sands last Thursday when that numpty got stuck... half the staff at the South Sands Hotel were down there trying to get the fella out..... the rest of us down there were trying to lash our RIBS to the pontoons as the 70 mph gusts came through....

Yep, thet's the 2.7 Mercedes engine from the ML series...lovely engine and helps the Jeep achieve a 3500kg towing limit too...

I have 3 land-rovers, 2 series ones and a series two.
I have them because I have always had them, I got the first one when I was 17 in 1986 as a Restoration/modification project.
The main attraction is their simplicity and how well they lend themselves to modification. The series 2 i have (1960) is a bit of a hybrid using the best bits from the landrover parts bin, and toyota/isuzu/rangerover parts.
Its ultra reliable and fun and useful. I often wonder though why couldn't landrover use all the best bits out of their parts bin on one vehicle?

I have driven plenty of defenders to be honest i dont think theyre worth the price tag there is no room in the things for a start, even landrover have given up trying to fit a quart into a pint pot and will end production soon. Don't get me wrong theyre a good vehicle but so are many others that offer better value for money and are a lot safer in an accident.
it will be a shame to see defender production ending but after being in production since 1948 with the same basic concept perhaps its time

as for this therad.......I promise I will never mention the L word on rib-net ever again even in jest at least today.
