Anyone know about Selva?
Found a Selva 15hp short shaft laying around in a garage. Bloke says it's runs but not used for ages. Won't take any less than £300 said take it give it a go and bring it back if you dont like/want it.
I'm guessing it's probably been sat for 5 years. Will it atleast need new crank seals and a good service.
But are they any good in general?
Probably 1998 ish I guess?

We had one in the eighties 20 hp it was ok basic 2 smoke I would take it away and have a play if he's offering but have a look on eBay you will get a mariner for around £500 mark running, you can soon spend £200 doing the selva up

I can see were you are coming from with that. But I've had alot of bad luck with older mariners/yam corroding inside the leg. Probably due to neglect but can't bring myself to buy another. Unless it was a much newer one.
I have a 2005 merc 3.3 and that's the best motor ever. But just no power to plane.
Ive also had a johnson 25 that was great but a heavy lump and I want this outfit to be lighter.
Think I will put it to him. If it runs with nothing needed 300 is his. If it needs parts I would have to re think what it's actually worth. Does that sound a fair deal?
Doesn't look to heavy for a 15?
Are they a copy of Volvo penta or similar?

I'd check you can get parts for it before you go too far with it.
My initial thoughts are it's not a bargain at £300 if you have to get it going yourself, they were never a mainstream brand and were always cheaper than the equivalent yam merc Johnson etc

The new ones certantly yam influenced but then I think mariner were at one point as with tohatsu making engines for merc now low hp.

That's fair enough but as said £300 bit steep for me

Don't think they are Volvo as they've been around a long time might be wrong worth contacting selva if parts scarce and it runs you have bargaining power to get price down as a throw away item when it's knackered OMO
£300 bit steep for me not running usually they go on eBay spares or repair
Edit selva been around 50 years

Anyone know about Selva?
Selva build parts for a lot of manufacturers including yamaha. some of the fourstroke range are rebadged yams but their 2 stroke range are there own. They make some interesting engines like a single cylinder 9.9hp.
I had a selva 'naxos' 15hp a few years ago and didnt like it. Seemed like 1960's tech and very agricultural. It came on a boat and I soon changed it.

Maybe I just need to sit and wait till something better appears for sale.
3.3m ply floor sib. With two adults, what you think really need 8hp minimum?

I had an old selva 15hp and to be fair it was capable of keeping up with a 2006 mariner 15 2 stroke on comparable inflatables, sometimes a bugger to start but if the carb and fuel lines were kept clean not too much bother, the terminals on the electronic ignition wiring also need good connections.
Not as good to use as a merc/ mariner/ yam etc but did the job.
Did manage to get a few spares such as recoil spring.
Do not think its worth £300 tho

From memory Stewart about 30 kg it was the commercial model 2 smoke I took it down a shale beach which was hard work but to be fair the transom wheels were crap with the big 12 inch ones it would have been easy all weight boat , engine , fuel 100 kg ideal for coast exploring in decent weather.
Fuel was ok 25 ltr would last a fair while at WOT all day with a mix trolling half throttle.
I've owned two johnsons 4&15 not my favourite engine bought them due to budget, availability at the time never let me down and spares are easy to find, would I have another yes if circumstances dictate but buy a good clean one as with any really unless you want a project to hone your mechanical skills.
Hope that helps

Selva 15HP
Just a quick message on this one. The Selva 15 or Naxos as pictured is still in production. Parts are readilly available and pretty cheap.
My business "Wet Bristol Marine " are Selva dealers and would be happy to help with parts or advice if needed. Feel free to give me a call 07580777467.
We recently supplied 2 of these motors to Sir David Hempleman-Adams. The motors successfully spent a few months aboard a yacht and acted as support for the trip around the north pole. Check it out gogle " Polar ocean challenge " the motors proved themselves as a good reliable unit.

Update
Well i went ahead and bought the Selva 15hp.
Got it a little cheaper because i found some work which needed doing.
Ended up more than I planned needed. But big thanks to Duncan at wetbristol marine. Well worth a call if your looking for Selva parts.
She runs and pumps water absolutely sweet now. And just after pictures fitted a new kill switch and re sprayed it.
