Aux on SIB
hey folks, still not used the excel 395 much, probably like most others last year in UK.
Looking forward to going more places (booked Oban end of April) so I bought a new Suzuki 2.5 this week to match my 20 I got with the boat nearly a year ago. How are people storing aux on sibs? Transom obviously be good but the splash transom covers stop that so anyone got something creative or is it okay on the floor carefully.

I may be talking rubbish but why not put it on the transom?
I'd be tempted to peel back the splash web off the transom (may need a sharp blade) leave it attached to the tubes. Then affix some velcro to the web and the transom top. You can then use the splash web as it was designed when you don't have your aux on the transom, but easily roll it back and fit you aux to the transom when your on longer trips. No need to stow the aux on the deck and it's in place on the transom when you need to use it the most, which will undoubtedly be in an emergency.

On the transom!
Heat the splash guard and peel back.
It came off easily on my Excel Volaire.
I use a ratchet stap to keep a little downward pressure on the auxiliary engine.
I have a wooden block cut to shape to prop the engine up to save the tilt mechanism.
I've since changed my auxiliary from a short to a long shaft as the centre of the transom is cut down for a short shaft main engine, however the port and starboard sides are considerably higher and require a longshaft engine for the auxiliary to be effective.
Simply remove the ratchet strap and block drop the auxiliary down and go.
It works perfectly.

this is mine you have to peel the splash web back and make a wood spacer to tilt the engine right up to get clearance for the main engine

Aux on SIB
I’m now really regretting bundling my old mariner 2.5 two stroke when I sold my Avon redcrest... ☹️

Not bad Jeff.
Just finished converting a transit into an off grid camper.
Bored with lockdiwn now ready to get back into the wilderness with the dogs in my Sib and the van.
Hope all is well down your end.
Fingers crossed we can get a good few meet ups this year

It went for £400 in the end, but to a really nice family with young kids which felt like the right home, much like me when I first started SIBing - they got a good deal I think!
Either way I needed it gone to a good home to make space in the garage for HMS Pip (as it’s become known) and the DF6A!
Wasn’t much paint left on the mariner anyhoo... just please don’t tell me how easy it would have been to repaint it [emoji23][emoji24]

Steve would you be tempted to put an aux on your 360 with your 15hp? It’d have to be an old 2S to be light enough and under the transom weight limit with both engines I guess...

Hi PK, it is something I'm currently talking to the "bank manager" about she complains that this birthday present is never ending!
We've got a few trips booked for this year, West Coast Scotland - Morvich, West Wales - Cardigan Bay and then the Gower later in the year, plus weekends around Conwy /Anglesey. I would feel more comfortable not relying on paddle power if any breakdowns should occur.

You're right about the weight, only got 15kg to play with so it will have to be an older, lighter 2s.

I have a Suzuki 2.5hp and intend to follow the same thought as Gordon and Jeff on my alloy floor Excel. I originally saw it on the Gurnard's post some years back.
On my honwave t3.8 I clamped my backup engine to seat using a wood frame, but this was because the trim tabs got in the way.
