I should think this is close to what could suit you v2mille and there is a towable toy included. Quicksilver 380 plus Mariner 25hp 2-stroke on a trailer...

Thanks Fenlander was watching this one just didn't know if the engine/boat length/hp would be enough of a upgrade from what we already own ?.

I think it would be significant upgrade... but only you can decide if enough. However if a Futura with 40hp was within your grasp and you fancied one I might wait for that!

Plenty of people on here have the bombard 380 and 25hp rig might find one willing to take you out and have a go, having a 3.4m rib with 25hp on a trailer I would say go for a hard floor futura and 40hp as it will seat 4 adults tow toys and be a "bigger boat" for a couple or couple with young kids a 25 is probably plenty.

Only issue is finding one in budget! But worth looking if any are local or you see any while out and about

I have tried a bombard 380 with a 15hp on it went well with some lively handling think that with a 25 fitted it would probably do the job and would be a lot lighter to handle, but I prefer a hard floor and an extra hp to carry the extra passenger.

Might be worth a read if a few years old http://www.rib.net/forum/f50/new-suz...0-a-65409.html

One thing to bear in mind with towing is you should have a spotter, so boat will be 2 up minimum, add the drag of a person on a knee board etc and suddenly your needing weight up front to balance/level the boat and you need to get up on the plane quickly so the person your towing can get up and plane too.

No fun being dragged along ploughing the sea.... this in my experience is where 25hp struggled was getting up quick enough and then having enough oomph left to be fun.

40 used to be the minimum fora RIB with 50 for a hard boat like a glastron/fletcher etc as i understand SIBs are less efficient (used to be at least) getting onto the plane as the lack of V in the keel meant more drag

I think the first part is right but a v doesn't help with drag - what you need to get on the plane is lift.

And the V helps with lift? It was a while since someone far more knowledgeable explained it to me....

What i do know is that a 30 degree bow to water angle doesn't help........

hdav - actually a flat rigid bottom will plane far better than a steep v given the same power. It will also be horrible in any waves and refuse to go round corners! a squishy bottom is poor because any upward force/lift it generates just initially deforms the shape of the hull rather than lifting the whole hull. So you need more horses that a nominally identical boat made from stiffer material.

Ah so its about the stiffness/rigidity rather than the shape

(How do you turn a dory)? Dell Quay used to be a popular alternative to a Rib.
