Boat licenses
This could be interesting, it would cost a fortune to implement.

It would be a bit like issuing licenses to people who wanted to enter someone else's house in order to combat burglary. Being cynical it just sounds like a way to raise some revenue from law abiding citizens.

It would be revenue-neutral to the realm as wealthy boaters would be paying for it. The least painful way to think of it is that it protects the UK's hard won freedoms and smile smile smile.
I certainly will

If they put a PB2 requirement with it, I’d say it’s a good idea as that’s been needed for a long time.

Yeah bring it in, I’m sure criminal gangs will be first in the queue. Hopefully it will stop all the migrants escaping from the UK into the EU.......

"But under new proposals being considered, anyone trying to buy an engine-powered boat of any size would need to present a licence"
Luckily for you petrol heads, that will include WAFI tenders too - and I can't see the Ruling Class Afloat jumping at it!

It's one of the daftest ideas to be discussed, you dont need a licence to drive a boat. Boats aren't registered so someone without a licence buys a boat how do the authorities trace who sold it to him without it being registered to a specific owner? There is no way to prove who the previous owner was.
They would need to implement compulsory registration for all craft like dvla then look at compulsory licensing for purchases it would take decades to implement & still won't achieve anthing
It's never getting off the ground, just a way for some govt department to justify their existence by "discussing" the proposal.
Total waste of time and resources

Governments discuss all sorts of options for all sorts of things, including outlandish options - that's their job.
The job of reporters is to find the sensational options like this one and publish them because that makes them money, not because they are actually going to happen

So basically make all outboards the same as 2 strokes to buy ........
Cause no cars ever get stolen...... and you don’t need a misconception to buy them....

I suppose someone else employed by The Times had to write something that wasn't to do with the current elections.
Looks like Matt Dathan drew the short straw.
