bucket or muffs

hi all, took my mariner 25hp 2 stroke for its first outing last weekend.
used it on the back of my aerotec 380 and it really flew.
great weather and a great weekend
my question is... (as previous thread) when i came to flush on single sided flush muff, the water from the tell tale was barely noticeable and what little water did come out was very hot.
am i doing something wrong or do i buy a set of double sided muffs or maybe a collapsible bucket i can throw in my camper for flushing when on the campsite.
i also read somewhere that these engines dont like flush muffs and when flushing you may have to block off certain outlets with gaffer tape and also they only pump water as needed.
any ideas would be much appreciated.
btw tell tale was strong when flat out but trickled when in neutral out at sea.

the guy i bought the engine off was the genuine type and assured me it had a full service in 2011

many thanks in advance

It doesn't sound right to me, but probably nothing major. My mariner 25 has a strong jet of water at tick over when in the water or using a single sided muff, but it is warm like yours when the engine is fully warm. I suggest you drop the gearbox off and change the impeller. You can download the workshop manual here:

The impeller part number is 47-850893 and can you buy them on eBay.

Doesn't sound right - should always give a reasonable 'jet' - could just be a blocked tell tale but worth checking working backwards from there.

Take a look under the anti-ventilation plate. If there's another screen (like the water pickups on the sides of the LU) you should tape it off when using muffs.

Some motors don't seem to pump a lot of water on muffs; my honda 40 didn't. Is the water coming out the exhaust hub (tilt the motor up and see if it still runs out the hub)? If so, it's making it through the motor for cooling. Run it at idle and keep the hose tap on full, and you should be fine.

No problem. You can download the complete manual by changing the section numbers at the end of the previous link. The sections are detailed in this cover sheet.
