Not sure the flooding nose cone idea ever caught on, novel idea though!
No need for an extra filter there, although I've always run a yamaha water seperator in the fuel line before the engine

I run a water separator between the tank and engine on my GRX420.

Thanks both, am thinking maybe the original filter insert is damaged/missing and this was added as a quick fix and just left in? Hopefully will have it back out on the water at Tresaith (W.Wales) this weekend, will take a closer look then.
