Calshot

Has anyone launched from Calshot?

I've not been there for decades but it strikes me as a good point for taking a SIB over to the IoW?

Yes I launch there all the time as I’m a member there! A bit expensive for non members I think!

Thanks. My thinking is that it would be quite a good launch point for heading to Cowes? Can you use things like the washrooms as a non member?

There are public toilets in the main hangar but the showers are by key code.

Thanks. How easy is it to launch from in terms of being able to set up near the parking etc as I'll be lugging everything on my own while managing two children? Is it effected by low water?

Do you have transom wheels? It's easy peasy if you do as you can park right at the top of the slipway.

If not you may have to carry stuff a fair way as it is pretty busy and people might get grumpy if you block the slip too long getting set up and walking back and forwards.

No tidal issues for a sib. Big wakes at times from passing ships so watch out.

The biggest pain at Calshot is the lack of a pontoon so you can't launch solo from the main slip in a rib.Probably different with a sib, depending on size/launch wheels etc.

Thanks.

It'll be a 4m SIB on transom wheels so the general plan at destinations is to set up by the car and the. Walk it to the slipway ready to just go in and leave.

Looking on google earth it looks like there is some sort of pontoon on the western side - or is that not useable?
I've got to get my son to and from Calshot / Hamble a couple of times this weekend and it would be much quicker by RIB than to drive round.

The pontoon is tide dependant and fully dries out at LW. I am not sure if the non members launch fee includes this slip. You require a code for the slip gate and another for the pontoon.

Hi Tufty,
Yes, saw that the pontoon was very tidal when i got there to scope out by car.
Very helpful chap there said that i could pick up and drop off from the old jetty if needed.
However my son was very organised and i simply picked him up and deposited him to the Beach. Saved nearly 4 hours of driving!
