Car Loaded
Hey! I was wondering if anyone has a pic with the gear fully loaded in the back of a car (not van) just to see what the logistics are for packing.
The wife has a slightly bigger car but if they all pack away nicely with just the seats down in a standard car I may be able to use older smaller BMW 1 Series
(T38 + DF20A + Misc Gear if anyone is rocking similar would be a bonus)
Thanks for reading!

Excuse the scattergun nature of this but my boat image files are a work in progress so this is easier than finding the images again on the Mac. In all cases there will be either a 3.8m Aerotec or 3.6m Zodiac air floor, outboard, one or two 12l or a 25l fuel tanks, transom wheels and all the kit for up to a week or two on holiday.
Current Ford S-Max. Seats 3,4 & 5 still in place. Loadspace cover drawn over the boat bits. Just a neat Tohatsu 9.8 2T though. Post 1 of this thread...

A previous Mondeo estate. Rear seats all usable still. I think there may well be a DF20A under that lot or maybe a 15hp 2T. Post 3 of this thread...

A previous Citroen C5 Estate, 2010 model. Rear seats still in use. Post 8 of this thread...

If you scroll down to post 10 of that same thread there is a pic of our old shape 5-series on our return from holiday in Scotland. As it says a 3.8 Aerotec, 3.4 Zodiac plus outboard and all kit inside. Another Aerotec on the roof. It had self levelling suspension thankfully.

I'll have to have a look and see if I have any pics, I've squished it all into various sizes of car. With the seats down it'll definitely all fit in a 1 series though.
I use a roof rack too, but I've also packed it all into a mid-sized hatchback with just the 60% side of the rear seats down, so I still have one rear seat. That's with an aluminium floor going in first. If you've an air floor then you'll pack it even neater than mine. I put the boat bag in upright and push it right up to the back of the passenger seat so most of the boot is still available for the outboard.
My PFDs go on the rear floor/under the front seats along with fishing rods and various other bits. Then I have a bag for the pumps, wheels, rope etc that goes in the boot too.
Your first go will be a learning experience but before long you'll become a Lego master of packing it all in.

Here’s a Honwave T38, a Tohatsu 20hp, fuel tank, life jackets, seats, transom wheels, electric and foot pump, anchor, throw line and everything else in the back of a Ford Galaxy with loads of spare space.

I completely fill the back with rear seats down of a Landrover Discovery. So all I would say is take the biggest car you have

The Suzuki outboard seems to one of the worst designs for how we have to pack it in the car, and with the heavier, bulkier Volaire, we just can manage in a Kia ceed estate with camping gear, dog and 2 adults…...wouldn’t like to go over a weigh bridge though
Just remember, that carefully packing at home might be much easier than in the pissing rain and wind in a car park, after a long tiring day on the water. So personally I would try the largest car first.
Oh and remember to lay the OB the correct way up…..especially if using the wife’s car…….dont ask how I know

2006 Focus hatch. No pics but it fills it. I have a carpeted OSB board with caster wheels at the top to put the 9.9 4S engine on for sliding it into the boot, seats folded down. Boat seats and oars go forward of the engine behind passenger seat. The boat 3.2m rolled up in its original bag goes alongside it. There's enough room forward of that to get the fuel tank in behind drivers seat. Everything else just basically gets slung on top. If I'm taking camping gear it still all goes in but I lose rear view mirror.
I have a small box aluminium box trailer roughly a metre and a half square or so, long enough to take the boat. Boat can go in there if I want to be bothered with that, as well as oars etc. I only bought that really in case any of my lad's mates want to come along, so I can have a seat down in the back.
I also have a roof rack and, rather than those hard Thule plastic luggage boxes for it, I have a canvas bag thing that I bought years ago for my old 1.0 Micra but have never tried out. The plan is, next time, put all camping gear in there so it's both a ready bag and a space saver for the boot.
Were I to take a photo of it, it would look like Ducati's but the boat is rotated 90 degrees and sitruated on the right, with the engine on the left.

Is this a test pack or are you on your way to some days on the water?

I’m planning a game of car Tetris this weekend to see how it all fits too.

Can you get your boat up onto the roof rack? Gotta be only 30-40KG or there abouts for a 3.2, right?
Depending on which vehicle I'm taking, I'll sometimes do that and it frees up loads of space. I keep the oars and seats in the boat bag too.
Even with the 3.8 I can still see out the back in a similar sized car to the Focus hatch, but it took a few outings to perfect the order and layout.

Yeah I'm terribly messy and disorganised, always in a rush to get the car loaded and get going. If we're taking about being able to have a seat down in the back, it would indeed be either roof rack or trailer. 38kg for my boat, can save a bit of weight by not having the air deck in the roll up, but TBH, while 38kg to the roof rack is totally do-able, it would be not fun and I have a bad shoulder (rotator cuff) at the min. Trailer better. Camping gear for the roof bag, 'cos it's light.

For full compliance with show and tell time...
Here is my current pack with seats remaining for 5 folks. First an anti-spills tarp, then the 3.8 SIB with air floor separate in the black bag. Next add 15hp 2-stroke well wrapped with powerhead slightly raised. Then the rest of the kit which includes transom wheels, bow trolley, Bravo pump, coats, lifejackets, dry bags etc.
The only cheat to declare is the 12l fuel tank is on the rear passenger floor in the centre but that would still allow a child in seat 5.

With all that and 5 people your car must be fairly down on the Axels re weight

Yes it would be but I never carry five folks... just us two plus dog. I only mention it in the context of others knowing what you can do with an organised pack.
Some folks like us might like to travel the dog in one rear seat, or a child in child seat or just to have the seats free to throw coats etc on.
If we stop for a takeaway to eat in the car en-route we often sit in the back as there's more room and we're behind black windows so our eating habits remain hidden from the general public.

I sometimes wish I had my back seats available simply so I can pull over and do a 20 min power nap . Much better when you can lay down, instead of drooling on the driver's window with a sore neck.
