eBay final value fees - beware

I’ve just sold 2 sibs. As usual I list things on several sites including eBay, gumtree and sites relevant to what I’m selling to maximise exposure. Both sibs genuinely sold via gumtree enquiries and so I pulled the eBay auctions to avoid all that goes with auction bidders. eBay are now trying to charge me £140, being 10% of the last bid before I cancelled the second auction on the Zodiac. Weirdly they didn’t charge me for cancelling the Yam 360s the week before. I’ve complained but has anyone else experienced this? Here’s a link explaining their charges https://pages.ebay.co.uk/help/sell/end_early.html

Im with ebay here sorry to say, You tried to take advantage of the system twice and got bitten.

I'm not a fan of ebay fees or ebay big brother tactics anymore than the next guy but you played the game and lost. You may just have poked the bear and they charge you for the other boat now.

Sorry Hymer but I'm with Xk59D on this one. The link you give explains clearly why you were charged... the auction had run over 24hrs and you had bids.

Be careful posting the same worded adverts on eBay and gumtree they are linked (I believe the eBay group now own gumtree) and the gumtree add takes its viewers to eBay on the apps but the lister cannot see it doing this when your logged in or using their apps to view your listing, check your gumtree add from a pc and you will see!

Yes I know that I played the system and lost. It was unknown to me until now and was just a warning really for those who might not be aware of it and are on the other end of the kind of cash deal suggested in the recent what to buy thread.

Yes gumtree are owned by eBay now as I discovered from the photo urls: I hope the Auzzies that started it got to buy themselves new campervans!

I find it annoying when bidding on eBay for an item you want ,which then gets cancelled for no apparent reason.
But never knew you get charged for it if you have bids, sellers beware indeed

they both had bin but that option disappearers as soon as there’s a bid above reserve (which was £1). I see they do classified ads and will use that in future as I guess they show up on eBay searches.

Ebay own Gumtree.

You've entered into an agreement (that's effectively what you're doing) by placing goods for sale, so late cancellations can incur fees.

ebay just isn't good anymore. They are less than helpful and I am sick and tired of them controlling what you see and what you don't.

Big brother eat your heart out...

I could rant about ebay all day, but its my Hermes that have annoyed me today xD

I think eBay brought gumtree just to control the listing and to be able to monitor the double listings and link the gumtree add to the eBay listing, thus preventing it being sold on gumtree without fees! very sneaky.
Gumtree is big for boat and engine sales now so posting on just gumtree is good enough but I must say mint stuff makes 1/3 more on eBay.

I think it's about sharing content. Gumtree has been growing in popularity and was starting to hurt EBay financially. Bit like Coca Cola buying Innocent. What is it they say... "Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer."

Yes, they now own it lol, but it's interesting now they kept and now keep it quite!
Buy out your competition then run it down to get it gone lol

The reason why people trade outside the listing is because of the fees! 10% is reasonable up to say a £100 sale but after that the fees should drop to around 2.5% when it's a £2500 sale. It's pure greed what auction service do you actually get for your 10% fees!

I know of three times something has been listed on ebay, I've been told a off the record BIN price or found the advert elsewhere. Liked the BIN price, but the auction price has been lower. I've set up a snipe for much more than the BIN price and still thought I would be getting a bargain... for it to be delisted.
If you are dealing outside of the bay you are probably not maximising sale prices if it is a widely wanted item.

You mean er... like they do?

Final value on Boats is covered by the Motor policy:
1% of the final transaction (min. £20, max. £35).. So your £2500 sale would only be £25 final value. With about £20 of other listing fees depending on your options chosen.

Final value on non vehicle transactions is 10% and is capped at £250. So if you sell something for £10k that is the 2.5% you asked for... I'll put reasonable money on the Final Value fee being > £100 creates far more work at ebay's side for complaints about untruthful listings, non-delivery etc.

Well, after a very nice on-line chat with Mokul in eBay, they are waiving the charge. Mokul did explain that the system automatically applies the charge if more than 1 auction is ended early in a 12 month period. Lesson learned!!

Well I am sure you could set up your own auction site, drive sufficient users and traffic to your ad to get several meaningful bids, whilst providing a platform where buyers feel confident to handover cash to complete strangers, and deal with all the customer service complaints both from sellers and buyers, both genuine and misplaced. You’ll need to sell a lot of stuff at a very small percentage though to make any money.

I was trying to buy something on eBay and it was heavy but happened to be in my town. I suggested to the seller(via eBay messaging) that we deal outside of eBay to save him (and maybe me) money. I got a nice automated nastygram from eBay about doing that that being specifically against their rules. A warning for first offense. I guess they were listening.

The first $1000 thing I sold on eBay caught be by surprise with the $100 fee. I complained, they refunded maybe half, and I never used eBay again to sell.
