Two main parts to the downsizing plan...

Elling no news yet but in theory should have reached Boatworld about now... but delays likely I'm guessing... Brexit paperwork and all that.

Outboard which had to be a 2-stroke Tohatsu 9.8 or the whole plan was doomed... and I just managed to get one. Had a good polish today and sprayed the prop... I like a shiny white prop. My favourite old shortish tiller extender fits which it didn't do with the previous two motors. It was a dealer purchase and they went through it so not much to do except throttle is stiff with not a hint of return spring which I like so will sort that.... and I'll get a TinyTach to start recording hours and check the current prop suits my use.

It was great to be reminded how easy these motors are to move about and what an easy pull start settling down to a quiet idle for a 2-stroke.

If lockdown easing beats the Elling delivery will trial this motor on the Aerotec and see how it rates beside the 4-stroke Mariner 9.8 I had a little while back.

Congrats on the new purchase Fenlander.
I was in the market for a Tohatsu 9.8hp 2 stroke earlier last year.
I could not source one new or second hand for love nor money!
I eventually bought a new Tohatsu 9.8hp 4 stroke.
Got to ask where did you get a hold of yours?
Is it top secret

After I decided this was what I wanted to do I Googled every day for ages "used Tohatsu 9.8 2-stroke" and chased every lead... always already sold. Chased one on here a member had mentioned but already under first refusal. Got the Tohatsu website up and phoned round dealers asking if they knew of any arriving soon as trade ins and made it clear I had a decent budget and could buy immediately... eventually got lucky.

It's weird as this below is the motor I bought at about 18mths old and as new in 2008... gone full circle really...

Glad you hit the jackpot Fenlander!
I pretty much did the exact same for around 3 months until I eventually got bored and decided just to buy a new 9.8hp 4 stroke.
I've been using my T38 with a 6hp Tohatsu 4 stroke as my blow up and go / caravanning rig.
I've got an Excel Volaire 430 with Tohatsu 20hp 4 stroke as my trailered rig.
I added another dog to my crew last year and my 10 year old son has started coming on trips too. I needed a bit of extra oomph on the T38 as the 6hp wouldn't plane with the extra crew.
If it doesn't work out for you can I have first dibs on your Tohatsu 9.8hp 2 stroke

Do you favour any particular brand of tiny tach David? Looking to pick one up myself & there are lots out there.

Hi PD, if its any help I went through three different Tacho's in less than 3 months. All different prices, £38, £25 & £15, all three let water in and the screen fogged up with the first hint of rain or spray.
This is the one I've got fitted now, and it appears to be OK, I've only done 30hrs with it but it has had a lot of water on it! I sprayed it with copious amounts of WD40 when I fitted it & I give it a spray every time I go out so perhaps that has helped.

I only use the tach for revs when setting up a new outfit or outboard so it just spends one or two trips temp cable tied to the tiller and then is retired to a permanent under cowl position as an hour meter and rev counter when service tuning.

So perhaps the type I always choose would suffer water ingress if out in salt spray every trip. But for my use it's this type every time. I have found the readings more reliable from this type that has an earth cable as well as the trigger cable.

This one is my choice and one just in the post for the Tohatsu at the moment...

...and is very similar to the 2-wire Quicksilver model which usually sells for £70+...

>>>added another dog to my crew last year

We lost our seadog (seen below in evening sun at Tayvallich pontoon) just over 2yrs ago and it's taken us since then to source his same breed replacement (seen below in his car crate on the way home from collection) who we've had two weeks and hopefully will enjoy boating as much.

Getting the dogs out when they're young is the best way I think.
Bonny little dog what breed is it?

Here are my two cocker spaniels on a T38 6hp Tohatsu 4 stroke powered circumnavigation of Bute late on last year.
We were in company with another old sea dog called - The Gurnard. You may have heard of him
They are mother and daughter and both absolutely love being out on the water.
The pup is an absolute natural so confident - just takes her lead from her very experienced mum

Yep this is our second German Spitz Mittel after two Keeshonds before... all super companions. Well recognised!

Current pup is a wolf sable colour which is quite rare in the GS but as you probably know the standard for the Keeshond.

That's something we're missing this time. We've not overlapped like the previous two pups so we are having to teach him everything.

Last time I saw a Keeshound was about 40 years ago when my Aunty had got a puppy, rare then and I guess they still are? Neighbour has a GS so I recognised her/him straight away.

Seems like we are going to be twins fenlander. Same boat same engine lol. I’ve been watching this thread with great interest as it won’t be long now until I become a fully pledged member of the Elling love club.
I’ll be looking out for a tachometer for mine and I’ll probably end up buying the same as you because I trust your knowledge and experience. I’m looking forward to other posts on the Elling when you get it just so I know what and how to do with mine. Keep up the good work with the Elling posts.

I also have this one, has been soaked with the hose, rain, sea spray, made it through winter and no sign of faults. Yet [emoji23]

Great thread Fenlander, watching with interest!

Pikey Dave, did you get your poover battery? I got mine over a week ago, when fully charged it was only showing 12.1v so I messaged the seller who told me to discharge it and the recharge. I did that and it still only reads 12.1v. Was wondering if it is because it’s a lithium battery? It took well over 90 mins to get down to 9.8v but was still going strong so I’m not sure if there is a problem with it or not. I’ve ordered a battery gauge to show its % before I contact the seller again. Also, may I ask where you got your Cooper anchor from?
