Boatworld said they expected delivery in first two weeks of March but there could be delays with current import situation. I am sitting on my hands until the end of the second week before I chase.

Yes a longcase from around 1740. Dad was a dealer and restorer... when I was a teen I spent my summer hols cleaning/servicing movements for him at £5 a pop so working on them is well ingrained.

I bet the 2nd week of March can't come too soon. Good timing though, just long enough to do any tinkering before lock down rules are eased.

You must have more nibble fingers than I, anything smaller than an M6 and I struggle

Yep that's often the driver to selling old when buying new. But I have no strong view either way on what others should do... just know what suit me.

Interesting heads up on the 3D printer SR... but when I run out of boaty tasks more likely to be found fiddling with tech nearer 300yrs old such as in the image below...
Now that looks like fun. If you need a part you could 3d print it. Matching the old with the new

Also there's the small matter of storage space. We don't all have the room to keep "things" in.

So not necessarily to do with OCD, but sometimes more to do with practicality.
Fair Point..... I just get another shed

In my continued desperation to do boaty things while we can't go out here are the spare fuel cans I've upgraded to (green cheapy for comparison) They are made in Canada and the type supplied by Yamaha dealers. Nice chunky shape.... spout stores in can... and a safety ratchet type lock on the cap. Easy shape to store and tie down.

A 5l and 10l so we can take either (or neither) depending on anticipated range.

How much fuel do you expect to use in a day with the tohatsu ?

Once I've got any new setup how I want it and we have a decent run I always check the fuel used to get an idea for a particular outfit. I always go by the rule of thirds for what we carry... a third out... third back... and a third left in the tank as reserve.

I would expect the Elling may be a more efficient hull than my current Aerotec and much depends on the weight carried.

With 15hp 2-strokes in our typical use I've used much more than half a 25l tank so would have run out had I been using the Tohatsu's 12l tank.

Tohatsu do a comparitive guide but all figures are given for WOT... and for a mixed day out you will average far less revs.

As an aside one speed that is very heavy on fuel despite being slow is at displacement just before you get on the plane... say around 7/8kts.... while you push and drag a lump of water around.

For our 9.8 2-strokes Tohatsu say 4.9 lit/hr at 5500rpm. At those revs if kept constant you may cover about 28Nm and of course with the 12l tank run out soon after.

So other than a very modest trip I'd plan to carry the 5l spare and on a big holiday day out in Scotland carry the 10l spare. We do tend to use less fuel in the south of England with a SIB as our trip profiles tend to be shorter. In Scotland for example one place we like to stay it's almost 7Nm from the slipway to the open sea down a long sea loch so you have a 14Nm fuel use with that transit before exploring the open sea.

Thanks for that David, I think I’d better put some spare tanks on my shopping list. How much were they? Or do you think it might be best to get a 25l fuel tank for the tohatsu and use the one that comes with it as a spare?

I've had to give up the 25l tanks due to weight (re neck problem) but yes they were my usual upgrade in the past if anything came with a 12l. My cans were £25 the pair which is good value to me as a Tohatsu style 12l tank is £40 for a cheap copy and £70 for a genuine one... and I have more flexibility.

I can't remember... how far do you think a day out for you might be?

Having never had a boat before I haven’t a clue as to how far we will go in a day. Basically I guess I’d just look at the fuel gauge in the tank and if I apply the same rule of thirds then that’s how far we would go. £25 is very reasonable for the two so I’ll probably do the same as you because I don’t really want to be carrying too much weight with me.

This is a very broad guestimate... with the 9.8 2-stroke using a 25l tank or the standard tank with a 10l spare should give you a round trip of at least 46nm which is 52 land miles... still leaving your third reserve. That’s a fair mileage being bounced in a SIB.

Much more than that and you will come into the Gurnard expedition class and need food, stove, tent... and shovel!

I think for my first few trips out in the boat I will be keeping fairly close to where I set out from, that way I’ll get a good idea of how long the 12l tank will last. After that I may set out on longer and further trips. I’ll be building my confidence up bit by bit. This month seems to be going so slow lol.

Ahh I'd not noticed I was about to top 6,000 posts... I think you have to get to 10,000 before the invite to a celebratory pub meal with the bosses arrives.

Re oil my personal thing is to keep to the oil Brand of the outboard but many times I've been told that Quicksilver is as good as any and the dealer that sold me this Tohatsu who runs a huge outboard lease fleet said use Quicksilver and it will last without issues. So I have bought 2l of Quicksilver.

Wow expensive stuff. Having a quick look online and some makes you can get 5l for the same price as 2l of quicksilver. Is there any real difference between brands?

As long as it’s TCW3 you “should” be ok. I’d put the manufacturers recommend oil in a new engine until it’s run in & got some hours on it. Then I’d switch to a good quality TCW3 oil. In the big scheme of things, the difference in oil prices is the least of your worries.
