Elling KB350 owners here?

I wonder how many have bought this boat in the UK, including myself.

I only know of 3 others and one of those is now based in Spain.

Stand up and be counted

The more the better.

Our Aerotec meets the need of a very light air floor SIB that doesn't suffer the conventional flat air floor flex issues and packs well in the car. It seems the Elling fits a similar need. One to watch for the future now the Aerotec model is no more.

I looked you up, is the river tidal where you are? If so what sea fish are caught there, moor up on the wrong bank and you need your passport

Hi Oldman
Yes the river is tidal and is quite a large river that has been dammed in 2 places further up, in the river there are carp, trout that I have cought and have been told fresh largemouth bass, as for the coast not too sure will have find out as sea fishing is all new to me only ever been a course fisherman.
It will be a challenge that I am looking forward to, I am luck as Grey has offerd his advice and help .

Hi Guys,

I have purchased one of these Elling KB350 but not sure what outboard to use. I assume I need to buy a short shaft motor ? I fancy the Mariner 15HP but concerned it might be too heavy to carry, but to be signifcantly lighter I guess I would be looking at a 6HP. I am going to use the boat for fishing just off the shore and some recrerational fun. Hard to know what to do for the best ?

Best Regards

Steve

Ah, so you bit the bullet and went for one Steve, do you have a delivery date?
My 8hp 2t is 28kilo, a 10hp will give you a fair bit of speed and add a motor tota or converted sack barrow to ease the movement from car to transom & back to save your back.
Visit a dealers showroom and test lift one or two to get a real idea of weight. I find its not so much the weight but the awkwardness of the shape that makes them difficult.

Delivery should be next week although I probably wont get out for a couple of weeks due to work. Looking around the Mariner 9.9 looks a good compromise between weight and power.

Thanks Mike,

I know this might seem a silly question but it is possible to row the SIB, I was thinking of taking out for a test without an engine ?

>>>I fancy the Mariner 15HP but concerned it might be too heavy to carry, but to be signifcantly lighter I guess I would be looking at a 6HP.

The two absolute sweet spots in portable outboards re power to weight are 6hp and 20hp models.

6hp - Mariner/Mercury/Tohatsu/Yamaha/Honda all 26/27kg... Suzuki 23kg.
8hp - Mariner/Mercury/Tohatsu/Yamaha/Suzuki all 37-40kg... Honda 42kg.
9.9/10hp - Mariner/Mercury/Tohatsu/Yamaha/Suzuki all 37-40kg.... Honda 42kg
15/20hp - Mariner/Mercury/Tohatsu/Yamaha/Suzuki all 43-46.5kg... Yamaha 51kg

Although a "lesser" brand the ultimate light weight in some sizes from Selva. A 23kg 6hp and 27kg 8hp.

I was a bit surprised Yamaha 15/20hp models were still so heavy... thought they would have produced an efi around 45kg by now?

In a river or at slack water on the sea but with little wind unless its blowing onto the shore, yes but against any sort of tide I doubt you would make a lot of headway quickly.
I cant see what you would achieve with a rowing test, it will float might be nice on a chalk stream, but not the muddy Medway.

Thanks for the info, very useful.

I was leaning towards the 9.9HP as somehwere inbetween but at £2k I feel like better value would be had going for a 15HP EFI for a couple hundred more but it will be heavier, I just can't decide, goimg round in circles

Hi Spool
I think you have made a good Joyce buying the KB350.

On my KB 350 I have a Orca 9.8hp that was bought from Boatworld that I am very pleased with.

I have just done the 20 hour service on it changed the oil in the Engine & Bottom Unit plus 2 new spark plugs and a general check up all very easy to do, it starts with no problem and runs very nice.
With the 9.8hp on my KB350 it gets on the plan and settles down very quick and easy to a speed of 19mph that I have got so far using it on a river, not sure what speed it will do on the sea but for me I would not like to get anything more heavy

The Orca 9.8 Outboard from Boatworld weighs 40kg and having my boat in Spain I was told it is based on the Tohatsu 9.8, the Orca cost around 1,200 pounds so its a very good price when you look at the other makes.

I think you will be very pleased with your Elling KB350 like I am with mine; I have my boat & Outboard on a trailer so it is very quick take it to where I am going and easy to launch and retrieve with transom wheels on.

You won't be able to fit a 15hp 4st to it as the transom is only rated to 45kg. I have a 9.8 Tohatsu on mine and can get 20mph out of it no problem. The Tohatsu is the lightest in class at 37kg.

I am torn between a few sibs but one i was interested in was the Elling KB350 as it looks solid and stable. I was hoping to mate it to a Suzuki 15HP 4ST but this looks like it is not an option according to the above. Any pointers gladly received.

Also looking at:

Honwave T38 - £1150 - heard about the floor issues
Excel Volaire - £1279
Excel Vanguard - £1159
The Elling at £1395 is the most expensive

I think I can buy a 2014 Suzuki 15HP 4st for £1500 to go with the above

The data sheet for the kb350 says 15hp and 45kg** and yet the data plate on the transom just says max HP 15.
Had you bought a 2nd user boat knowing its year of manufacture was 2020 you would make an assumption that the transom would carry the weight of a 4 stroke 15HP engine seeing as you cant legally buy a new 2st version here for private use.
Just saying...

**I have re read the data in 2 places and I am now sure the weight is for the boat not the engine. No weight is stated for the outboard just 15HP max.

Surely most of the modern 15hp 4-st models are about 44kg anyway. I think Yamaha are the only ones left just over 50kg which is the weight they all were ten years ago.
