Elling Outboard

I’m sure that this question would have been asked before but things change so always worth an ask

Just received my new Elling KB350 and was looking at putting a Tohatsu 9.8 2stk on it. I have manage to source one after jumping through a lot of hoops.

My question is before i pull the trigger as there anything else that i’m unaware of sub 30kg that would push my new addition along.

And as an aside who’s responsibility is it to enforce the 2 stroke laws ? I have done some searching and can’t find either the answer, or any indication of checks etc.

Thanks in advance

The 9.8 Tohatsu two stroke ain’t perfect but there’s nothing out there now with that power to weight ratio and runs like a sowing machine, so sweet. Well suited to the lightweight Elling and perfect match in my opinion.

If you’ve managed to source a ‘cheeky’ new one, best not attract attention on a public forum.

Thanks for the heads up….

Question for Chipko if I may jump on this conversation: is an 8hp upgraded to 9.8hp a viable worthwhile consideration? It’s been done professionally and has a 3 month btb warranty.

I have no experience of this hence the question but believe they are capable of upgrading.

Papac: may also be worth considering and would be happy to share details as the vendor has two.

No expert but upgradable. Needs the 9.8 carb as far as I know…about £125 genuine or £70 copy. Not sure whether timing also needs adjusting.

Plenty on here with much better knowledge.

Solent based retailer who has a very good reputation so if it is a ‘doable’ conversion it will have been done right. Compared to some second hand options out there which are, imo, overpriced, it could be a good option. I just wasn’t sure if it was a known conversion.

I thought the Tohatsu 2-stroke 8-9.8 conversion was easy... but beware someone a month or two back had researched this and the parts to change for a full conversion were uneconomic. So maybe the one you've been chatting about is a "part way"??

Thanks Fenlander. I’ve already emailed the dealer and asked what has been done.

In the interim, thoughts on this one on FB?

See posts #38-42 in this thread...

My head is spinning a bit at the mo so I'd forgotten it was Steve that pulled me up on saying it was an easy conversion... by quoting a reply of mine years ago saying it wasn't so easy.

So approach a converted 8hp with caution.

The Facebook one looks genuine and clean... if the seller, history and reason for sale checks out. Prices might just have started to move downwards so £1200 could be a bit heavy for a grey one.

I’ll be calling the FB one tomorrow and agree, price looks a bit heavy but if it is genuine…

Appreciate your thoughts.

It’s simply been a re-jetting of the carb to change from 8hp to 9.8hp.

Hmm well yes then be cautious that likely may not have achieved the full 9.8.

I don't have time this minute but it would be interesting to re-visit the parts fiches for both 8 and 9.8 to see which parts are different.... and see why a few years ago I was so confident there were many changes.

I'd like that dealer's answer to be the result though as it would make an easy upgrade we could all bear in mind.

Maybe consider giving Peter M a shout in 'the other place' too as he appears to have three OB's for sale from 8 to 15.
