Engine Advice For 4m Honwave

Hi again,

I have a Honda BF20 fitted to my 4m boat and i think it's a great engine but i would like a bit more power and speed along with good fuel economy.

I am interested in the Honda BF30 or the new Etec 30. Looking at specs for both the weight difference is minimal so the 4 stroke / 2 stroke weight argument doesn't really apply anymore. The Etec is about £500 cheaper and obviously has the advantage of 2 stroke acceleration along with no servicing for 3 years?!

I appreciate the Etec is a new engine and therefore info is limited at present.

Will there be a noticable speed increase over my 20?

What would you guys go with, any advice really appreciated.

Check sib transom plate, what is the max power rated for ? Put what's rated there, if looking for more speed with your 20 HP engine make a wot sib/engine test to see max rpm achieved, depending on the test reading can go for a lower pitch prop to have that extra missing rpm to be at the max rpm for that engine. Will asume your speed will increase a bit, but not much as expected. Go for the Etec 30 if your sib can handle it safely.

Loco,

The boat is rated for maximum 30hp, why do you favour the Etec? I think alot of people in the UK are a bit scepticle about Etec, not too sure why?

Thanks

If I would have to chose between a 4 stroke and a EFI 2 strokes would preffer the latter as I like 2 strokes simple & reliable engine technology. Etecs are supossed to be highest evolved 2 strokes enines, have reached top of the line 2 strokes technology. Anyway, buy from a reputed dealer who has the technical squills and original parts to service engine when needed, and offers good factory warranty.

Etecs and 4 strokes have not received a good customers response down here, mainly because of cost, dealers are not prepared to service them, need costly equipment to do so. Love to service with a screwdriver, like in the good old days! Although been offered 4 strokes and TLDI Tohatsu technology, will stick with 2 strokes untill they are finally cut out of production.

Wait for 4 strokes, Etecs fans, for a technical pros/cons post about these types of engines. Personally cannot help you with this issue as not being a 4 strokes, EFI fan owner. Definitely a 30 HP would be far superior to any 20 HP engine in planing faster, more end speed, more load to carry.
