Engine for Honwave 3.5

Hi
Just got my teenage lad a 3.5 honwave for running about in Lake Windermere .Im looking for an engine for him to carry some fishing gear and a couple of mates and have been offered a 2009 Mariner 8hp four stroke.
I know it's a heavy engine but we will be fitting engine when launching but wondered how the 8hp four stroke will go.Was toying with a lighter 2 stroke but really would prefer him to have a 4 stroke.Any views appreciated.

A 4 stroke 8hp will plane the Honwave when its lightly loaded.
Add a passenger or two and it's gonna be displacement speeds only - unless they are built like whippets.
I have a 2010 Honwave 3.5ae.
Solid build and very capable Sib but not the fastest.

For that sib you really need a 15+ To enjoy it And a 2 stroke 15hp would weigh the same or even less than the 8hp 4 stroke I guess as its lake use you don't want to dump the burnt or non burnt oil in the lake which is fair enough and sensible and I sure 2 strokes are banned on some lakes and I think some now only allow electric motors, If your only using the boat on the lake I guess the 8 will be ok if your only going on the lake. At least it will be nice and guite and not smokey but for the ocean I would personally use a 25 maybe even a 30 2 stroke.

Indeed, don't even contemplate that.

Maximum permitted on the 3.5ae is 20hp.

Mine goes extremely well with the 18hp 2 stroke

Likewise my 3.5ae goes well with a Tohatsu 20hp 4 stroke.
I also have an airfloor Honwave t3.8.
The airfloor is much faster with the 20hp - however my 3.5 ae has a lot of bolt on accessories and is as such a good bit heavier.
A 20hp will shove you along nicely.

My t38 planed easily enough 2 adult and 9.8hp 4stroke.

For a few teenagers on a lake 8hp 4stroke would be adequate. And atleast it's not 20odd hp so shouldn't cause to much chaos.

I brought a 50cc moped once and soon learnt the low power was more dangerouse than a 1200cc as I had no power to get out of the way.
The op of 8hp for teenagers use on a lake is suitable

Overpowering a boat as you also suggest is just stupid and no justifying it with the bike analogy, Especially with young people in it.

If you read back on the thread, I stated 'I personally' would use a larger outboard with the op's sib and I also posted that using the 8hp with the op suggested use is a good and sensible use for his advice post. Let me elaberate on my "I personally" post, I would use a larger engine than 'rated' outboard because I am an experianced power boat user and I often carry the full 'rated' load a sib can carry which is often a 450 plus kg rating. For me personally who uses cat C rated sibs in the ocean at the half ton plus boat load is under powered by using the max rated 8hp outboard (honwave t27i) bearing in mind that the cat c rib used is rated at gale force 6 and 2 meter wave height. The outboard max rating is not a condition of use just like the recommended use of alcohol per day is 2 units or whatever, it's not a criminal offence to use a boat above the rated limit, its interesting that no max speed is applied to these sib ratings that is something I would like to see instead of the focus only on Hp rating. It do not condone nor advise what's become know as over powering a sib by using a larger than rated outboard engine.
